So I just received a catalog in the mail with two camera setups smack on the cover page.

Anyone agree with me that these new underwater camera systems are unfair to the poor fishies . . .

I mean, come on . . . give the fish a fighting chance

Whats happening to the "sport" of fishing

Next they will have a tiny spear attached to the camera which can shoot the fish!

That ranks right up there with baiting deer while hunting. Why bother? Just buy the meat precut and say you caught it.

I can see the coolness factor for just seeing fish while sitting around, but as a fishing aid.. come on. Then again, there are some fish, no matter how well you can see them, they just never bite. At our camp, we used to have these 4-5 bass which were a good 3 feet long swim past our dock every morning.. what they ate I have no idea, becausae they never ever went for any of my lures. Smart bastards! :)

They said the same about fishfinders when they came out.

Seeing fish doesn't mean catching fish :)

Most water I fish, the cameras would only see a few inches. For the most part, they are just another toy to play with when the fish are not biting.

I have seen some utube video in the past, of pike attacking the camera. Now that's cool.

I disagree !
I say they are unfair to the fisherman , and , give the fish an unfair advantage .

For all the time some poor fisherman spends squinting at that itty bitty cheapo screen , he is not fishing .
I wouldn't doubt that some species will soon take to swimming upside down , just to screw with these folks who use them .... :p :D

I think underwater cameras are cool. I don't have one but a friend does.

BTW- a camera is much less efficient than sonar for finding or locating fish.

Re: Angler Underwater Camera Systems Unfair!

I have nothing against electronics for fishing, and I have a crummy depth finder/fish finder on my boat. However, what I observe while fishing on my local lakes is a lot of folks in expensive boats staring at their screens and not catching fish. They're missing that school of minnows over there getting attacked by a hungry bass. They're missing seeing that fallen tree over there on the shoreline.

While I'm watching them peer at their LCD displays, I'm casting a crankbait at that minnow school, or working a jig and pig around the falldown.

With few exceptions, the bent poles I see are held by guys who are fishing, not watching some display.

That's fuuny :D

I've seen that same video or one similar. Pike are awesome to watch when they strike. I agree...for fishing not so much but for pure entertainment I'd watch some fish on a little tiny tv on board.

I'd rather be able to see the fish due to water clarity- like in the Au Sable river or Lake Huron where you can see 10-15 feet and trout or slamon are in the shallows.

I love my underwater cam, i use mine mostly for ice fishing. They do come in handy for ice fishing as you can see how the fish respond to your current presentations, and its just cool to watch fish swim by. Unfair to the fish, nah i like it better when I can see them take the whole jig so i get a good hookset.

Also really cool to have it pointing at a tip up for pike, you'd be surprised how many you miss because your live bait is to lively and how many fish actually come by your bait.

They are used to identify bottom and structure to find fish. I couldnt see this as a tool to target specific fish. Just the same as a fishfinder..;)

Or you could just walk into a fish store and buy a fish and save your money on the camera.

Next thing I'll see in the catalogs is their new line of exploding lures :D  :D

Hard to find in most states, but the M80 surface/shallow diver has been around for years. :D

That's funny.

M80's bring back memory's.

When I was a kid growing up in Boston before we had driver's licenses we'd hitch hike to Rhode Island where fireworks were legal in those days and come back with two shopping bags each filled to the brim with M80's and Cherry Bombs.

Then we would open up shop in our local park and sell them to everyone for $1.00 each. We'd then take our profits and blow everything at the dog track :(

Nice childhood

We are going to hang my friends camera in line above the cannonball when trolling for landlocks and lakers at some point. I think it will be interesting to know how many actual followers we have and see what happens before they hit.

Humm.......I can see fish on my sonar and depending on water quality,
at a lot greater distance than any camera could see

Unless it automatically hooks the fish on the end of your line I can only see it as being less efective than a fish finder.

The basic fishing lure presents more of an unfair advantage than a camera or locator.
