twin alpha one outdrives, 1987, one drive does not have anodes on the bolts the bolts are regular hex head bolts and no thread to put an anode on it. Would it be an issue to remove one at a time and replace with proper bolt? don't want to cause problem and lossen the transom seal or something.

Re: anode bolts

He's talking about removing the bolts on the transom shield to replace it with a bolt capable of accepting an anode. I believe they are held on by nuts on the inside, but I don't know for sure. I don't think the problem is breaking the seal, I think it's getting to the nut.

The manual shows they are right next to and below the exhaust exit on the forward side of the transom.

Ayuh,.... That job usually requires pullin' the motor 1st....

The bolts that belong there, are aluminum...

Re: anode bolts

Not good, guess the bolts that are there stay for now, hope the anodes on the unit leg help and so does the mercathode system.

Re: anode bolts

Is there any spot on the housing or those bolts where you could attach some type of anode until time might come to replace the bolts?

When we were having the survey done on our Sea Ray the broker pointed out that one of the trim ram end anodes had broken off and being a slipped boat, they had a diver just bolt on an anode clamped around the same location.
Wasn't pretty but did the job until I had the end-cap properly replaced.

Re: anode bolts

OMC used to just screw an anode block to the fiberglass transom. Do anodes have to be on those bolts specifically?

Here's what's listed in service manual 6 that I was looking at:

To be effective, new anodic heads MUST make good electrical contact with gimbal housing.

That will work just as well, as long as there is a wire connecting the anode on the transom to the drive. Even a wire on the inside of the hull (connected to a bolt holding the anode on).

Mark, see my comment above.

Merc did stop putting anodes on that bottom bolt around the era of the OPs drives. You may just have a drive that didn't come with anode bolts. Just make sure you have other anodes on the drive and they are not being consumed too quickly.

Re: anode bolts

Thanks for the thought, attache anode and run a wire from the gimble housing, so long as there is the electrical conductivity it will do the work needed.
