yep yesterday we were out enjoying a picnic on beautiful lake sonoma . kids were having a blast tubing all day when suddenly click click click followed by a bunch of chatter and loss of oil pressure. got towed in put it on the trailer and took it home . pulled the dipstick no water in the oil. reading full on the stick but smelled burnt . i will go home tonight and pull the plugs . but its seriously wasted .. good thing is everybody made it home safe ..
so anybody know of a used engine ? :(

Ayuh,... I've got a rebuildable core motor out in the garage, but I think shipping would be the killer...

Howdy,

Last summer I replaced a friends (crack-block) 3.0 in his Bayliner. He obtained a longblock from http://usengine.us/omc.html

They claim they can fix cracked blocks and they accepted his cracked core (although the value was less since it was cracked)

you're not going to find a 3.0 in a wrecking yard easily. They didn't put that engine in cars and trucks. It's an industrial engine (so you might find it in a forklift or manlift etc!!)

Your best bet might be to get that one repaired/rebuilt at one of the several machine shops in Santa Rosa etc.

Cheers,

Rick

i will check into that site as well .. as far as machine shops i got that down no problem . i have been in the auto parts wholesale and service buisness for toyota and lexus for 16 years so tools and machine shop stuff no problems. i just have to yank it and see whats up with it . i assume worst case then when i get it torn down if its not bad . i feel ok about it .. im just irritated because i baby this thing and keep it properly maintained. but when its time its time .. oh well ..

well we spent about 30 minutes on it tonight. pulled the plugs and boroscoped it.. cyl walls look fine . plugs are in great condition, pulled valve cover off also and rolled it over a few times , valvetrain appears to be ok. also with the boroscope i didnt see anything abnormal with the valves.
so its probably rod or main bearings. im going to pull it out this weekend flip it over on the stand.
i will take a pic of any carnage..

would you put new rings in it and get the valves redone?
your son is lucky to have that experience, my dad got me to help recondition some diesels with a GM mechanic and years later still draw on that. please post some photos.

Re: Another 3.0 Omc Flatlined

thanks rob .. yeah kids dont typically appreciate the knowledge until they are older .. however my son has been offroading since he could walk , he used to love digging up greasy ujoints and axle parts at the rubicon so i figured get him started early . at 9 he was changing axles for me so i could kick back with the buddies by the campfire and drink beer. he loves it .. as for last nights work i already knew it was lower end i had a stethoscope onboard the boat it sounded like the #4 cyl and it was low like a main or rod bearing ..
i had my son do the boroscope strictly for experience. plus its a cool tool and kids love that stuff ..

Re: Another 3.0 Omc Flatlined

blktout67.. yeah sorry .. i have been burried at work , and i also coach competitive youth soccer .. we did yank it out on sunday tore it down to find #2 rod bearing was mostly gone , the pieces in the pan were a dead giveaway , i took it down to selby machine for evaluation . he said it can be saved but it will set me back about 1500.00 , new pistons, rods, rings, bearings, valves , pushrods and all honeing, redeck and crank grind , oh yeah and a new cam . not really that bad as far as price .. i have been selling toyota and lexus parts to him for 15 years or so .. so that saved me a little $
im on the fence on what to do next . is the boat really worth saving ? probably not , but the family loves it so i think i will save it ..what next . do i get a used engine and take a chance or just build the one i have knowing its getting all new components..

I'd do the rebuild...instead of 'rolling the dice' on someone else's 'as is' engine.

You can factor in the reasle value that the rebuilt engine will make your boat worth...not to mention the fun times that you will have with the family!

Happy boating!
