Re: another 88spl

Basically, the 88 is an exact clone for the 85/90 crossflow. Made for many, many years-there are thousands still around. A really popular engine at the time. Parts are still readily avalable. They were a great engine in their day, but are considered by many as gas hogs by today's standards. I would think you should get around 35 mph with a 17 pitch prop. The 88 special was a reduced-cost product offering by OMC. The engine is a 90, but did not have the VRO fuel pump and many did not come with power trim, so was rebadged as an 88.

Re: another 88spl

Had a 95 88spl. Love the motor and it wasnt too bad on fuel. Was on 17 ctr console and I fished all day on 1/2 of a 20 gal tank. Very reliable engine. I prefer these type engines actually.
