I went through many threads on the forum about this topic. Tons of useful info; almost all have slight variations or involve an engine swap, which isn't my case.

Next year I will need to rebuild the transom assembly (bellows, bearing, cable) and water impeller and possibly reseal my 1990 Alpha One Gen I paired with a 1998 3.0L.

I found a decent deal on a full Gen 2 setup (outdrive, transom assembly, and power steering) off a 1998 3.0L bowrider; it's "ready" to drop in (I need to inspect it all in person).

Other than removing the engine, what would be a reason not to do it? I've read that Gen IIs have several benefits over Gen Is, including smoothness, quietness, and a more durable water impeller.

The whole Gen II assembly costs a few hundred more than I estimate I'll spend rebuilding my Gen I with OEM parts.

Appreciate the input.

You have to drill 2 more holes in the transom for the new assembly.
I read about that. I can use the inner plate as template. And I haven't researched it but I guess one has to apply 4200 to the inside of those two new holes, and replace the transom gasket.

Just coat the exposed wood with a thin 2 part epoxy. That's already more than the factory probably did.
