There seems to be no end to the amount of bayliners with problems found on forums, and people both defending them and trashing them. I want to get into boating, but realistically probably 5 to 7 times a year on the Chesapeak bay, my wife and I have other hobbies like bicycles, motorcycles, camping, etc. Which is why I wanted a cheap boat. So, this one has low hours, a 3.0 OMC, radio, fishfinder, gps, and is very clean. The floor is solid and I checked as much as I can as far a rot goes. I like the color, the layout, and the style. BUT, this is what concerns me. The chips in the gell coat on the back corner above the outdrive. So I am asking the experienced here, could this be a sign of rot? Do these boats, or any boats, chip in this location often? I am new and appreciate any and all input. Take a look at the pic, tell me what you think.

what the heck caused those????

hi....welcome to iboats !

any boat is only as good as its owner. if it is stored correctly, and maintained.....chances are it will be good...
left uncovered in snow and ice and sun....well....welcome to the dry dock.

those chips are not conducive of a rotten transom...those are impact chips from something whacking the gellcoat from the out side.

gellcoat over a rotten transom will tend to crack, starting as a spider crack then going to long cracks over the rotten area as the fiberglass flexes beyond the ability of the gellcoat to withstand flex.

Thanks for the welcome!

So I should look for those spidery, brownish type cracks?

The boat looks like it was well cared for, the interior is original with no tears in the oppolstry. The hull is shiney and looks new, it has the original camper top, with a couple of tears in the plastic part, the engine runs good and it shifts good. No sea trials though, just on the ear muffs. It still has the monkey fur (I learned something as I lurked) in the cuddy. All for around $1700.

My biggest concern with that would be the OMC.
