The local deer herd has lost another fine member tonight. She's not huge, but a nice sized 3-4 year old.
She did an about face and ran back into the road just in time to meet my 16 year old GMC Safari. Wham! Quite a solid hit and jolt considering I was only doing 35mph. Head into the grill, shoulder into the headlight, front legs outstretched, so she went down under the van. Radiator is intact, light assembly is shot, kink in fender. Got her hanging now, will cut her up in a couple days.

Van will require some sort of fabricating on the grill, and an $85 light assembly. THe same light the last deer destroyed. This makes 2 kills for me with this van, and a few minor bumps. It also hit 2 deer before I bought it.

I can't imaging driving these roads with a car. I see them in the parking lot every couple weeks, all smashed up, $3-4-5,000 damage.

Good way to get extra meat, Roscoe! Had a crazy friend that used the push bumper on his old jeep to get deer. He would take off through the fields to get them. He was one sick puppy!

Glad you got her hanging - hate to see good venison go to waste!

Left shoulder and neck are bad, but the rest looks good.
Its amazing how this van keeps coming thru with little damage.
I get "opportunities" every week, and usually avoid them. But yesterday, the roads were ice covered from a mist of rain. There was no way I was going to try to stop.

At the intersection a mile from my house, I saw 17 unclaimed deer in one year. I wonder how many were claimed, and how many were able to run away?
It was a very high deer traffic area till they built 2 new houses there last year. Now the deer cross the highway in a different spot.

You ever think of using a grillguard/bumper combination on that van. I have one on my '78 Bronco and have used it on two deer with no damage. The only problem is it boots 'em back in the woods like it's driving a golf ball. Sure shakes that truck too. I never have found them, but both times have been at night.

Bowfin

WELLLLLLLLLLL.....let me tell ya'll about the buck I seed the other night while it was doin' mucho damage to the drivers side of my venerable ol' Silverado.

She herself and I were comin' back from an early morning breakfast (0345am) and just got back onto the highway. All of a sudden I see head and antlers at the left front fender and two very loud "thumps" which was the darn thing hittin' the side of the truck.

Pull over to inspect the damage and see if the critter was still alive. No front left head light, door is caved in so much I can't git the winder all the way down, even the inside is messed up. Rear quarter panel is punched in.

And the deer is no where to be seen!!! I walked back to where the strike took place and nothin'!! The dang thing just took off! It ain't right I tell ya'. Even the trooper said it ain't right. I didn't even get an antler outta the deal. Bummer duuuuuude!!!!

Re: Another bites the dust

The last one I hit was a 13 pointer  :D
It really ticked off the neighbors who were watching him and waiting for the season to open.

If it hits just right, a brush guard works ok, but still some damage. If it hits just wrong, the brush guard ends up causing an awful lot of damage.

I friend of mine hit a large doe last month, with her shiny new Durango. The brush guard buckled, the whole front end caved in, the hood buckled, the windshield broke, and then the deer wrapped around the side. Over $9600 (maybe more)in damage, and she still doesn't have the truck back.

She's really going to be mad at me when I show her how well my GMC held up, compared to her Dodge. :p

Re: Another bites the dust

I was thinking, maybe I should get a brush/deer guard for the S-10, love that little truck, but ummmmm, well, against a deer I think the word "flimsy" would apply

my sister kathy's kids had a run on deer a few years back, of course, the oldest boy claimed he "hit a deer" late one night with sis's car, we went to where the accident was supposed to have happened and there was kathy colored paint all over the Armco barrier there, lol, yeah, those marauding car eating "deer" are sure vicious! such are the hazards of life in rural Elk twp, in lovely southern NJ

the kids that drive all have their own cars now, so she gets a break

for a little while

her next wave hits in 2006

hello MAACO!!!!

Re: Another bites the dust

I keep hearing stories about folks out here in California who hit deer but get arrested for cutting the throat and gutting the carcass out. Guess it makes more sense to let it suffer for a while then let it rot???? I suppose if in season and it is a legal buck you could drag him the legal distance from the road before he dies so you could shoot him so it might be considered legal. Fully half the deer and most other large game are taken illegally here. So it is better to poach than to have one wonder in front of your car on the road?? Less damage to the car poaching, anyway. Evidently less chance of getting caught, too. California is truly the land of the fruits and the nuts. The edible kind which grow on trees are found on farms like those near where I live. The rest of them tend to get elected to political office or hold positions in the unelected bureaucracy.

Ya can always use the extra meat...Specially when it comes reasonable. I have certianly paid far more than $85 light assembly and some tinkering for one of mine. The loss of a front quarter and a neck is very reasonable loss...sure beats hind damage.

Personally I find it a shame to see them lying there going to waste, unless of course they look like the were hit with a mack truck.

Gun Control = A Steady Hand guess that applies to the steering wheel too :D
Only in California
This happened between Willow Creek and the Hoopa Indian Reservation where we lived at the time.
In 1958 (I was only 5) But still remember how mad my Grandpa was when he got home.
A deer jumped off a bank above his car and landed in the middle of the top of his car! Flipped over and broke it's neck. While he was standing outside of the car looking at the head liner only inches above the seat, the local sheriff pulls up and gave him a ticket for hitting the deer!

Yep, been real lucky as far as vehicle damage goes.
Dad's been lucky too. He hit 3 or 4 deer and a small bear in the last 10 years. No kills, but no real damage either.

I learned to hold my line in the face of deer while driving semi. That's one of the first things I was told when I got behind the wheel.

Around here, about 90% of the personal injuries, and 50% of the vehicle damage, is caused by the driver swerving to miss the deer and ending up in the woods or ditch.

Well, the meat is all cut, cleaned, and frozen.
The rib cage received more damage than I expected.
I took a strap and a hind quarter, then gave the rest to my uncle. He got lots of good meat and has time on his hands to trim all the little stuff for burger.

Been looking at new/newer vehicle, but know what will happen if I buy one.

Re: Another bites the dust

you guys are sick for enjoying the death of an animal... you should be carrying infirmary tape, bandages, gauzes of several sizes,etc....

ok, that's one view. i'm like most, i hate to hit an animal. but if i do, and its a game animal, and i know what to do( familiar with game seasons) i make food out of it! the last 2 deer i ate, were from road kill. its a shame so many are hit, but at least they are harvested for the same use as the cow - food!
