Ihave a 1985 85 horse that is currently bogging out at 2300 rpm.it started out as an intermittent problem on last trip and now simply stays bogged out. I have replaced the diaphram and check valves all the fuel lines and the ball. I have pulled the line from the tank and checked that screen.during the failure I have puMped the ball to no avail. it has no problem getting to max rpms in reverse or neutral. Just problem in forward. There is a electrical smell whenever I run it with cowling off from the area of the stator.I think I got the description complete but please let me know if you need more info. Thank you

Re: another bogging out thread please help

Yes new plugs.funny thing happened last night, once the fuel dropped under a quarter tank the boat hopped up and is running fine. A buddy lent me a portable tank so if it happend again on this trip I can troubleshoot the tank.

OK. i am back from the lake and in front of a desktop computer instead of my black berry so I can type a little better> Thank You for the replies. I know the carbs are the only thing left in the fuel system to look at but they were rebuilt last spring, and I am having trouble grasping how a carburator problem could cause this problem. I had a trigger sensor go out last year and lost one cylinder till i fixed it. The boat was still able to get on plane it just took a little longer under load. With this problem when she runs she runs well,. but when whatever is going on happens it just will not break that 2300 rpm range. It is not missing either. Wondering if plug wires could be a problem as I have the original coil with built in wires on the motor and to replace i would have to buy three new coils at 60 bucks a pop. Timing?? Reeds?? Anything. Also i currently have the clymer repair manual. Does any body know if the seloc is a better version? Sorry for the long post and thank you for the help.

Re: another bogging out thread please help

check the compression and spark, ohm out your stator , sounds to me like your dropping a cylinder, stator should read between 500 to 800 ohms, if your smelling burnt electrical thats where id start

So I did the ohms test and had a bad lead> i pulled the flywheel and the staor has one yellow wire burned out of it. I already have a new one sourced out but was wondering if the spare blue wire can be put to use to do the job of the yellow wire? And thhanks again, your tips are taking me in the right direction!

Pulled the flywheel and one yellow lead was cooked right out of the assembly. Had a little chafing on the wire caused by the flywheel. Could the wire grounding to the flywheel have caused the failure? also i found a new stator, shipped third day select for 130 dollars.
