I have a 1985-70hp rude I tried to put carbs on it off a 1987-70 rude but it still bogs out. If I use the 87 intake manifold and reeds do you think it would work then?

The usual sequence, Pat, is to find out what is wrong first, then change the faulty part.

You need to give us more info and history.

Pat,I dont think its in the intake or the reeds if the reeds look Ok.The 85 and 87 did have a different exhust configuration, but I dont think that should be a factor, are you sure your sinc and link are OK ,is your timer base rotating along with the throttle arm,.I am assuming your compression is good as well as spark, because you have been fighting this for a while. As for the carbs, they are clean and have jets installed ,i ask because Ive seen guys put carbs on and forgot to reinstall the jets, the old hurry up thing,I think you have been messing with carbs ,so Im just trying to put mechanic error out there too.

Here's, the history of the motor, I took off the carbs and put them on a 1983 70hp johnson that I sold, it ran great, wish I didn't sell it. Anyway, I thought I would put this 1985 together that I had laying around. I got it all together except it bogs down. Compression good, great spark , I have 1983 and 1987 carbs all rebuilt, trigger arm moves fine, I have had the carbs off and on probaly 20 times, took the jets out of the 83 put them in the 87. I have run out of ideals. I am about ready to give up on it and sell it as is.

If you "tap" the choke when it boggs does it pick up and go or make it worse? Why was the 1985 apart?

Re: Another bright ideal?

if you put the powerhead together,is there any chance the pistons are in wrong, also,I know you said you had all kinds of prts from different yrs,the midsection is for the 87 ,correct,as you probably know, but with no other answers im throwing it all ,out there ,the87 has a different exhust on the midsection and the engine

I got this as a parts motor for 100 bucks, the lower unit was locked up. I never took the power head or the midsection apart. I had only took the coils, powerpack and carbs off.

The choke makes no difference. I took the vro off and put a standard fuel pump on which I rebuilt, it pumps good.
