Well after the problems a couple weeks ago, got the parts in and boat running, heres whats done so far, new stator=red, tested and good, had one bad cdm, replace 2 of them, had one new one on it already so all 3 new now, replaced volatage regulator, with universal one people on this site have used, and a new battery, a couple weeks ago, boat was running great on the water about 3 hours, voltage gauge pegged at 16 volts, then boat died, which the above items i replaced to fix this. Yesterday was on the water 30 mins crusing along about 4500 rpm, volt gauge pegged again!!! then stopped charging, tach quit working, pulled engine cover, found voltage regulator melting gel, parked at beach for a while, then headed for ramp, on the way there no charging still then all of the sudden it jumps to 16 volts again, tach starts working, stop and disconnect the red wire from the regulator cause i didnt want to fry my new battery, im running out of parts to replace........lol and am at my wits end why this keeps happening, anyone have any ideas???

Re: Another burnt regulator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How many AMPs is the regulator you used rated at? The red stator comes in two versions. One that charges at 9 amps and the other which charges at 16 amps. If you have the 16 amp stator, it may be too much for the regulator. Most late 1990 model motors use the 16 amp stator.

Im not for sure, it was replaced at a boat repair shop before i got the boat, if you think the late 90's model ones have 16 amp ones then it might be cause its a 97 model, but it even burned up the factory installed one also, and now this one in less than 30 mins

Re: Another burnt regulator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A couple of thoughts. Hopefully some else will be able to comment on them.

At the risk of stating the obvious it is getting too hot.

Does the regulator have good contact with the metal bracket it sits on to draw away heat. Some regulators earth through the body of the regulator itself. A bad contact may cause some arcing and generate heat. My regulator (1998 75hp) has an extra grounding wire fitted to get a good earth. (I could post a photo if this would help).

Are the positive wires that lead away from the regulator in good condition? If the energy being converted to 12 v DC cannot get away from the regulator it may build up as heat. The red positive wire leads from the regulator to a fuse, then to the positive IN side of the solenoid and back to the positive side of the battery.

You could test for resistance in the + and - circuits with a multi meter.

Yes it does have the extra ground strap on it, i cleaned the connections before i installed the new one, it actually goes to one of the bolts holding the regulator on, the wiring is in good shape, surprisingly it didnt show any signs of heat or burning, im gonna get the meter out today and try to check a few things and maybe get lucky and figure it out.
