Bad seals? Absolutely!! Which one? Can't tell you. Only an inspection will tell. Has it done damage by running with being full of water? Very possible.

I suggest a complete tear-down of the lower unit and replace all the seals. Don't ignore the shift rod seal.

Re: another cd 17 ???

Any idea of cost to do this job ?? I've never worked on a boat motor before how hard of a job is it ??? How time consuming for a rookie ?? Would i be better off trying to find someone to do it ?? Thanks Again !!!!

Re: another cd 17 ???

With the help from this site you should be able to do it. All the seals come in a kit and you may need a seal puller and few other special tools and definitely a service manual / step by step procedure. As you come to a road block, just start a thread and the experts on this site will help you out. You own a fairly common motor.

I have a CD-18 that I had to re-seal and since my dealer said they wouldn't work on any motor that was built before 1973, I didn't have much choice in who was going to do the job. My suspicion is that the cost of having a dealer do it would most likely be more than what the motor is worth, but others may differ from that opinion.

I would not want to do it again, but I would if I had to. I would just complain a lot as I was doing it. Good luck to you.

Seal kit is probably around $20-$25. The problem with this motor is you have to remove the powerhead to disconnect the shift rod and drop the lower unit. You really need a service manual to tackle the job, as there is a carbon seal at the top of the driveshaft with many parts and you have to get it back in the right order. You will also need a new gasket to reinstall the powerhead. Better replace the water pump impeller while you're in there.

You need to try to find an engine specific manual. The manuals that cover several different years and motors , can be too vague , on specific motors.

Well I'm having no luck finding a GOOD step by step manual for this motor any suggestions ??? Also what special tools will i be needing ??? So far I see I'll need a seal kit, Powerhead gasket for re install , and a New impeller anything else I should be looking at while it's torn down ???? I just recruited my father in law for help he's a machine builder and says we can do it, I just want to make sure i've got everything before we start !!! Thank you VERY MUCH for any and all replies !!! Matt

Re: another cd 17 ???

Well the seals can be a little resistant to coming out so a seal puller would be very useful. Its a metal tool with a small bend at the end with a handle at the other to help you pull them out. A heat gun for the really stubborn ones can also be helpful here. You should also have some sealing compound like 3M #847 to really seal the two halfs all around the spagetti seal and the O'ring on the prop shaft. I also sloshed it into all the screws including the phillips pivot screw.

I also needed to use a 5/16" tap to tap about 3 or 4 threads into the shift rod bushing. I then screwed in a 5/16" bolt and then one can either pull the bolt or what I did was use a 1/4" rod and tapped it out from the underside. There is also a special tool you can get for this, but my method worked fine.

I ended up using a SELOC manual that I picked up at the library. I just photocopied the appropriate pages. It is not the best but with it and some common sense I made it through.

If I were you, I would also get another powerhead seal, OMC#303355 to make sure that is well sealed and if you didn't have it, the powerhead gasket number is OMC #313065 or Sierra 18-2901.

This diagram of the gear case may also be very useful.

You should also know that the impellar in water pump kit #391391 is a little different than the impellar in this diagram or that you may have in yours. I think they upgraded it and I have to say that water pump kit #391391 really works great. You could take a shower from the water that sucker shoots out.

Good luck.

Re: another cd 17 ???

The shift rod seal was just an O'ring which was included in the gear case seal kit. If I recall, I used a Sierra kit and the drive shaft seal it had was not the right one for my motor. I did not know why, perhaps the piece it fit into was changed on my motor. In any event, I just ordered it seperately and went back to work.

OK , I've started to take apart and on the top of the driveshaft spring there sits a little black cup like washer , and in the manual I have, it shows there is suppose to be an o-ring in the top part of this, but there was not one there and I don't see any in the kit that will fit ????????? Thanks Again in advance !! Matt

Re: another cd 17 ???

Well, there is supposed to be one there. I doubt OMC put one in it for cosmetic reasons. It sometimes sticks into that black piece and is not easily noticeable or it could have fallen out and can't be found. If you don't find it, I would suggest contacting your OMC dealer and obtaining another one. The part number is 303347. It would not be included in a lower unit seal kit.
