I have a 1973 65hp evinrude, I keep seeing on older threads that water is suppose to come out of the 2 holes in back of the motor. how much should i expect on ear muffs? I dont see but a few drips every once in awhile. all the notches on the lower drive are pissing but I am nervous to take it out on the water. It seems to me that the engine is getting hot but not so hot that it burns them. I saw videos on utube that shows the engine really spitting water at idle out the 2 exhaust holes, mine doesnt do that....Please help

If you are running on muffs you will not get hardley any water out of the exhaust ports. When the boat is in the water the exhaust housing is filled with water causing the water to come out of the ports, the bulk of water will come out of the center of the prop when running on muffs.
If you can hold your hand on the cylinder head for 2 or 3 seconds while running on muffs you are probably ok.

I agree, I don't remember ever seeing any water come out my exhaust relief ports. Completely normal. (I never looked back there while under way).

Re: another cooling/water pump issue

I have a 1970 evinrude and replaced water pump and recently a head gasket. When I put muffs on it I wouldn't use the word "hardly" when describing water spitting out. I would use the word that I just used- "spitting." Maybe it is different between a 115 hp and 65 hp?

If you are in doubt, install a temp guage on your motor. Easy to do. Buy the one that bolts on to a cylinder head. I can see a marked difference now on how cool my motor runs after having a faulty head gasket replaced.
