Always tow a boat by their bow. Use a knot on the towing vessle that can be quickly released under load in the event of an emergency.
Think of it like towing a car by one rear tire, it'll never track properly plus most sterns are square and heavier than the bow. If enough current hits the stern, water's coming over. In their case, the current was the defining factor. Very sad.
