Until the last elections the German government was anti American, but they want our bases there.

The "people of Germany" may be anti US.... this I would disagree with as I have in-laws there, but the Gov is right in-line with US policy, and Germany is a power house, even after absorbing the East side of the country.

Yep, the best way to deal with Iraq is to deny, deny, deny! Pretend everything is rosy.

Bob Woodward should write a book, maybe, telling us again what everyone with half a brain already knew.

actually the turkish kurds have wanted to take the lands lost to the Iraqi kurds for a year or so, maybe since the early 1900's.
if they get a chance they will quietly attack.
NATO or no NATO.
but like most the rest of the civil wars in that reagion it wont be "sponsered" by any particular govt.
we hung the Iraqi Kurds out to die back in the 80's, them folks got a long long memory. I would not trust either Kurdish sect.

Turkey is also trying to become full EU members. IMHO they're not interested in pissing anybody off right now . . . They want to be more Western, not less.
