What is the difference between Johnson and Evinrude motors? I have one of each and can't see any difference. The parts are interchangeable as far as I can tell.

The real truth is... After final assembly of the powerhead, the engines were test run and dyno tested. Those which started easily and had better than average horsepower on the dyno were painted Evinrude Colours and the rest were painted Johnson Colours. ;)

Re: Another dumb question, what is the difference between Johnson and Evinrude motors

14 years ago, Johnson and Evinrude split and were never the same motors after that year. Evinrude became the high-tech low-emission engine, and Johnson - until its demise in 2006 - was the carbureted traditional motor and, after Bombardier took over, it had the 4 stroke Suzuki models also.

Prior to '98 and for some years before that, then they were basically the same.
