14 years ago, Johnson and Evinrude split and were never the same motors after that year. Evinrude became the high-tech low-emission engine, and Johnson - until its demise in 2006 - was the carbureted traditional motor and, after Bombardier took over, it had the 4 stroke Suzuki models also.
Prior to '98 and for some years before that, then they were basically the same.
