another dumb question

I took this lower unit off seven years ago so reassembling it has been interesting to say the least. It's about ready to go back on, and all parts are accounted for, except I have one O ring that I'm not sure about. (It's about 1/2" ID)

There is a groove just below the spline at the top of the drive shaft. It looks to me as if that O ring belongs there as I can find no other logical place for it. Am I right? The only other O ring I've had in this project is a large one that belongs on the water pump .. it came with the kit. This one was in my box of parts.

I have a manual but I've not been able to find it. I also have the CD version of a manual, but its not been much help.
Thanks in advance
Tom --- 1958 Super Seahorse 35hp RDSL-20

an o-ring goes there its there to stop the driveshaft from riding up and down in the power head any oring will do also remember to grease the drive shaft before u put it into the power head it will help the next time u take it apart.i hear alot of people that get the driveshaft rusted into the powerhead. i gease it and slide it into the powerhead then i pull it out and put more grease on it so i know it will come apart for me next time

Thanks Wayne,
I thought that was where it went, but I've learned to not trust my memory. lol

The water pump kit came with grease and instructions to use it on the spline, but thanks for the reminder.
Tom

Wayne's right on but be careful and don't put grease on the end (tip) of the driveshaft. Grease the splines only. If you get grease between the end of the drive shaft and the bottom of the hole in the crankshaft, and tighten the mounting bolts, the grease won't compress and you'll push the crankshaft up into the upper bearing causing a major problem.

c/6
Hooty

Re: another dumb question

Thanks Hooty,
I only filled the spline with grease. The lower unit is on and the gears seem to work fine when I turn the flywheel by hand. I have instructions here from that CD catalog for adjusting the shift lever. I still have to do that... It started storming ... again ... so I'm done for the night.
Tom
