Hi all,
Putting Grandpa's old elgin back on the water (Model #571 58772 7.5 HP). Just getting started and the only thing done so far was a relube of the lower unit and a complete carb cleaning. I was able to get her to run for a few seconds and thats it.

So here is the first of many Q's,
Is there a trick to getting the flywheel off. I'm using a puller and can NOT get it to budge?

Re: Another Elgin

Leave the nut on loose to protect the threads.
Tighten the center bolt and whack it (the bolt )good 2 or 3 times tighten some more and whack it again. These little motors usually pop loose with little effort.

I wish that was the case. I've been at it for a few days now and it's not happening. Starting to get a little rough w/ it. The ammers and pry bars are getting bigger. I want to be sure there isn't anything securing it besides the key.

Not even the key. The only thing holding it is the tapers on the shaft and flywheel. Tighten down on that sucker (the center bolt) and raise up on the flywheel before you whack it. You don't need a sledgehammer either, it's the shock that does it. There is no reason it shouldn't pop off.

Wouldn't hurt to use a little "Nut Buster" or "Liquid Wrench".
You use the same basic procedure for motors many times bigger.

No joy. Getting really frustrated. I have so much pressure on it the top of the crank (where the nut is) that it's starting to bend. I can turn a wrench and I've pulled flywheels. This thing is on there.

I'm a fan of PB Blaster myself.
