Picked up the motor on the right for $50!! One on the left is a '70, on the right is a '74. It crazy how many of these longshafts I find around here. It runs perfectly, and just needed a choke knob (which I had on hand). Kinda cool how they changed the lower unit setup in '74. The prop became plastic (I think) and the exhaust housing changed. Other than that it is pretty much identical. Anyone know why OMC changed the exhaust housing like that?

I have I think 5 of these all Shorty's I have one that has the weedless lower and one folding, I also have a all white Jonny that is very clean, I just picked up another shorty that is missing the prop & splined hub, so I will have to find those parts. I wish I could come across some long shafts. I really like the look of your 70, I don't know why they changed it but might have been so the could share the parts with larger/smaller units.

I have the '70 model with the weedless lower. Nice little motor. I replaced the crank and rods in it, for a guy and that was four years ago. LOL As far as why they changed the lower unit design? I have to idea. The last change was about '64, to match your motor on the left. They had a single clamp screw when they first made that change, but soon went back to the double. The fiberglass hood, was a design change for '69. Prior years were all metal, with the integrated tank.

Kodi, if you are interested in a trade, I have a longshaft extension piece and driveshaft. We are opposites, I have 2 longshafts and a parts motor that is also a longshaft.

Well, probably all I'm going to do, is cut up a huge salmon and throw it on the barbeque and keep the fire goin' As long as my fridge is full of beer, then I'm golden. I may get out and see some friends too. ;)

I hear ya. Barbequed salmon is awesome!! Hey man, I dont know if you remember, but I got a hold to a 1957 35hp big twin last year. Well it is locked up, but looks possibly salvageable. Anyway, I have all parts except the carburetor. The lower unit and prop are in fantastic shape. Didn't know if you had any interest in any of the parts or not. If ya do just shoot me a P.M. I just dont have the time or patience (or space) to fool with it right now.

Thanks sutor, but mine will all be sold this spring, they are all tuned up , paint touched up new impellers, hoses carb kits and all good runners, When it comes to these smaller O/B's in my area I'm able to get about what they went for new! same for the 9.9 & 15 hp,, folks in my neck of the woods don't want to pay 3500 for a 15 4 stroker the weight, cain't throw'em in the bow of a skiff, or bush plane ect...its been getting better every season for the smaller 2 strokes, they are getting allot harder to come by but when I find one I grab it fix it up and it will be sold as fast as I can get the sign on it.

That sure sounds tempting, but my old '57 Big Twin is in decnt shape now. I actually purchased an ugly '57 Lark parts motor, the day before I bought the Big Twin, so I already have lots of spare parts. I ended up scrapping out a lot of the old Lark, but I sold the hood and got most of my money back. I did get a good spare lower unit off of it and the lower pan and all the electronics off of it, to convert it to a Big Twin Electric. I think if you posted that motor of yours on the aomci website, you may get some takers.

Yea, I would take it off your hands. Shipping anything like that anymore sure is costly.

I think a local aomci member would appreciate that motor, though. A lot of these guys have plenty of parts around to revive it.

Sutor, the motor on the left appears to be a 1970 model judging by the hood graphic. Really it is not different than a 1969 model functionally. The 1974 model you also have is nearly the same. The Yachtwin lower units changed on the 1973 models, although I am not sure as to why. Prior to 1973 the Yachtwin (90 degree high-thrust) & Lightwin (Weedless 110 degree, 20 degree downwards) were the same except for the foot. The foot from a weedless drive or straight drive was interchangeable right through 1972. For 1973 the Yachtwin got a new lower unit that seemed to be an enlarged version of what they were putting on the 2 horse. The weedless drive was offered into the early 1980s, and if you have one you could swap the foot or gearcase from a 1964-72 straight drive onto it no problem.
I have a 1971 Yachtwin, while my older brother has dad’s old metal tank 1967 Johnson 3 weedless, but it also is a folding model.

There are a lot of little specifics, but the straight drive intro coincided with the switch to single clamp for 1964. They stayed there beyond the cowl change for 1968. That year they switched to an external fuel tank with fuel pump on the motor, plus the dual clamps along with the new fiberglass removable cowl, plus the low-profile spool type starter. For 1969 they were upped to 4-horsepower. The head changed with angled plugs.
