another fuel tank question

I have a plain old aluminum boat and I smell gas fumes. The tank I have is plastic.

1) do plastic tanks vent both out an in?
2) do steel tanks vent only inwards so gas fumes do not leak out?
3) can I buy a non-outfuming vent for a plastic tank?

you are going to smell gas fumes from the vent. If gas is not leaking anywhere then you are fine and not much can be done.

A vent is a vent !!! outside temperature differential to the tank internal temperature will cause either fumes out or air in scenario. Live with it !!! it is a great fragrance.........almost as good as 2 stroke exhaust first thing in the morning !!!!!!

Could it be that you have an old fuel line and have been using gas w/ alcohol in it? Maybe the line has softened and soaking up gas. I have a plastic Honda fuel tank and I do not smell gas fumes from it unless you stick your nose over the vent.

I have an aluminum boat with a plastic fuel tank and I also notice the smell of fuel all the time. I store the boat in my garage and when I open up any compartments I notice the smell. I have checked every fuel line tank connection etc. and have found no problems.

My conclusion was that the vent in the tank lets some vapor out and this vapor sinks to the bottom of the boat and stays there. Once I tow the boat to my destination, the smell is mostly gone.
