We went out about 5 o'clock this afternoon and the line was long at that time, both with people getting their boats out and others like me putting their boats in. Well I waited my turn to get to the ramp and the guy behind me was waiting to get his boat and there was probably five or six people lined up behind him.

This one guy in a beat up pickup truck with a trailer passes everybody and lines up to back down the ramp. I started to move my truck to block him from backing down, but my wife told me to stop. The guy behind me gets out of his truck and we both say something to the guy and he says the line of cars has nothing to do with who is next, it's whose boat is at the dock and his boat was at the dock.

I said Bull the line is the cars and you need to be at the back of the line. He proceeded to just back down the ramp while my wife told me to just calm down and let him go. I just could not believe anybody could have the nerve to pass all those cars with trailers on them and some with boats on them. I still can't believe it.

I'm curious.... is there only one launch there?
I would of went ahead and backed down before him.

I bet not only did he cut line he also blocked the dock with his boat. I hate inconsiderate people.

Sad to see such morons and it really make me glad the launch I use is 100 yards wide and has 10 lanes, it was not even bad retrieving after the 5th of July fireworks.

It is busier than normal here due to Salmon~A~Rama, a fishing contest.

I cant believe some of the vessels I see people taking onto lake Michigan.

Some of the ramps I use are funny like that, it's like that guy has to get his boat out of there before anybody can do anything, It makes no sense to sit in line with an empty trailer because the boat it belongs to has to come out, I do the same thing sometimes.
The line starts at the ramp with the boats, new people comming in to offload can't do it till the ramps are cleared so what do you do? He's right.

That depends on the launch. If its a single launch with no space for anything then that MAY be the case.

agreed, depends on the launch. But if there's a courtesy dock, tie the boat up out of the way and wait in line and get the boat after you've backed the trailer in. If you're with someone else, then have them wait in the water on the boat and wait for your trailer to be backed in. My guess is that those ramps that "require" you to cut ahead are not the norm...and it sounds in this case the guy should've waited in line as there were other folks waiting in line with empty trailers.

Kinda funny though........ I have seen people get all hot and bothered by someone whom is by themselves. They beach their boat out of the way, then go get their rig, sit in line forever, then back down, then go get their boat... mind you its beached down out of the way so it takes more than 5 minutes to retrieve and get out of the way............ and then there are still people mad because he had to walk over to his boat and leave the truck sitting in the way....blah blah blah, seems nobody is ever happy with anyone at the ramps.

I wonder if the ramp was clear, why you were not there trying to launch!!!

I dont know the specifics, but its a two edged sword....

like the lady who sits at the light and doesnt move for 3 seconds when it turns green...she is screeewing the last few cars, who now wont make that light....

dont they have a right to get upset...if the first person isnt being efficient???

some rasmps are just destined to be miserable....one side docking and limited at that, then private property right after the dock with a fence right to the dock...

nothing on the other side...if a bunch of solo launchers come...it is going to be anything BUT efficient

Re: Another Idiot at the Ramp Today

Rarely do I have to deal with ramp issues (at least as far as boat/trailer issues). Last night I was leaving the lake at sunset. There are two docks. Between the two docks there is room for two trailers and no room for any tie-off/courtesy area. On the left side there is a very shallow area where a boat can be moored. On the right side there is a single ramp, again with no courtesy area. No beachable area anywhere. As I came up to the retrieval area from the water, there was a trailer dead center in the area betwen the two docks. They were not overly fast, but if they were one one side only, it would have been acceptable speed. Anyway, when they were done I put my boat in the shallow area mentioned above. (No one ever uses it and I was boating alone.) I then walked up to get my trailer and overheard the driver of the center trailer commenting that her problem was a new tow vehicle that she could not see around. I told her about the magnetic trailer guide balls and suggested that one stuck to each fender would solve her problem. When I got back to the ramp, someone had jumped in front of me and said that he was not sure how long I might be talking to the other individual. "OK, no big deal". I got my boat out and as I was pulling out, another guy had an I/O with a bad Trim/Tilt and his skeg was dragging into the top of the ramp. Several of us tried to assist him with no luck.

This sounds like a boring story with no point, and that is the point. Don't sweat the small stuff. Makes for a much more relaxing trip that way. By the way, I am still working on that. I mostly do OK at the ramp, but I still lose my cool at ignorant people on the water. Tends to ruin my trip, and not affect them in the least.

Ahmen!!!! Glad we share the same local waters..... I too boat a lot by myself, and try my best to ignore the ignorant. I once had nowhere to beach my boat, so I tied off to the courtesy dock.... by the time I got back with my rig(about 3 minutes) some dude had untied my boat and given her a shove out.... this was a time I lost my cool and also spent the night in jail.;)

Re: Another Idiot at the Ramp Today

There are room for four boats to load/unload at one time, but it's tight so we mostly just do two, one on each side of the dock. There is also a courtesy dock that will hold four or more boats. His, of course, was tied up to the dock at the ramp.

The reason I didn't go was because there was already somebody on the ramp loading their boat and there was not room for me to back down. This idiot started backing down in front of me, saw there was not enough room so he sat there and waited for the other guy to pull out and go around him. I was not able to even cut him off and get in front of him.

My wife was really on me cause she thought I was going to get into a fight. She said I was beet red and had my chest out and sounded like I was ready to fight. I think the guy behind me was pretty close to it too.

Re: Another Idiot at the Ramp Today

Not taking a side here, but I ramp I use for striper fishing in the fall is a 2 lane ramp, a ramp on both sides of a floating dock. The "understanding is the boats in line to be pulled out determine order. I have been in line for 50 minutes last fall as the boats were lined up 2 by 2 (up 20 boats waiting) to the ramp. If the right ramp moved faster then the left line had to wait. The boat at the ramp determined your spot. I always thought it was the boat at the ramp determined order. If someone backed down their trailer on the ramp but their boat was not there, how do they maneuver around the other boats? I guess if its a single wide ramp, more then 1 trailer can be loaded up.

The water is not the place that it will serve you well to be "That Guy". People like that will sooner or later need someones help and bad karma usually has a way of coming around.
