Another "Is my boat slow" question...

Well, I'm sure ya'll are getting tired of my questions here, but I've got another and hopefully it's in the right topic... For those that don't know from my previous posts/questions, I've got a 16' SeaStar fiberglass tri-hull with a '75 merc 850 I-4 mated to her... After finally getting my tach fixed and feeling comfortable taking it up to WOT (since I now know I'm not blowing past the recommended 5,500 rpms), I have found that at WOT, I'm hitting exactly 5k rpm's, but can only get 31mph out of her, that's with me and the wife and minimal gear (maybe 450lbs total weight in boat), the boat supposedly weighs in at 964lbs dry weight w/o motor.. unfortunately I don't know the pitch of my prop, but seeing as the rpm's are almost dead in the middle of the "sweet-spot" I don't know that I should try to change the pitch.. my question mainly is, does 31 sound slow for this thing?? Also, I have manual T&T, so trimming it out once on plane is outta the question.. I have tried running it with the trim pin in the three holes closest the transom but only noticed a 1-2mph diff.

In the 3rd hole from transom, it planes out great at around 2500 rpm's and has perfect plane after 3500rpm's. I thought about raising the pin another hole, but worried I might get too much positive trim and cause cavitation... Any input is greatly appreciated.

Re: Another "Is my boat slow" question...

Hey
Where are you getting your speed reference from? if its a paddle wheel or pitot tube on the back of your hull I would be leery on trusting that speed.
I had a 1973 15' glastron tri-hull with a 1997 mariner 75hp o/b and with minimal weight could hit between 38-41mph (gps).. I had power trim but really that would only change the speed by about 3 mph and the speed is generally still related to RPM so even if you could adjust your trim it wouldn't allow a faster speed at the same RPM it would allow a higher RPM at the same amount of throttle which would then give you a faster speed.
The reality is if your speed is a GPS speed and you are getting an accurate 5000rpm (make sure all the settings on your tach are set right) then I would say that is all you can get out of that boat/motor combo.
hope this helps
Nate

Thanks Nate, knew I was forgetting to include a detail or two lol.. I am getting the speed from three different gps systems... my cell, wife's cell, and my tom-tom unit. All show 31, with the exception of my phone occasionally jumping to 32 for a minute or two, then back to 31.

Not being able to trim out is robbing 3-5 MPH for sure.

Not sure what prop you have. Some are total dogs made to move the boat an not designed with anything in mind other than that.

What would be the recommended prop for that engine/boat combo?? (I know this isn't the prop section, sorry :( )
