Today my tilt motor stopped working. It would lower drive (1989 Cobra) but would not raise, it only clikcs fairly loud, like a relay or solenoid. Both batteries are freshly charged so it is not them for sure.. Do I need a new motor?

Keeping things simple, I would first check all your connections. For my first tinker with my boat since last November, my down tilt worked perfectly but my up tilt just clicked (this was on a stringer drive but the principles are the same)

I set about to check the voltage at the connector, between the solenoid and the motor, and when I pulled the connector apart it was apparent that the pins were corroded. I cleaned them up, applied some di-electric grease, put the connector back together and the outdrive roared upward. Budda Bing!

there should be a sticky thread on OMC trim wiring problems.

Got the issue fixed. The problem was that connector that goes from solenoids to the hydraulic pump was old and rusty... I guess when power is not going to motor solenoid just makes a loud click sound...

Yep, as I said, check the simple things first. Hope you put some dielectric grease in that connector?

For sure, with the clicking, the solenoid is doing its job trying to send the power down the line but if the juice does not get to its destination, nothing happens.

I will have to find a new connector as this one is all cracked and pieces of plastic are missing, so it wil not stay together if will be exposed to vibration etc... I have an old connector from oxygen sensor which was also 3 pin I might use that...

Re: Another Issue Tilt Does not Work Just Clicks

I am currently experiencing the same issue going both up and down with my 1981 Invader - OMC sterndrive won't go up or down. I hear the two solenoids clicking when I hit the switch. So, are you saying the wire connecting the solenoids to the tilt motor was the problem? Or, was it where the wire connects to the tilt motor? I am new to this, so please forgive the basic nature of my understanding.

Thanks,
Andrew

Check your connector for the tilt motor. That is between the solenoids and the tilt motor. That connector takes its feed from two solenoids, one for up and one for down. It takes a lot less current for the outdrive to go down, as opposed to up. If your drive does neither, then you connector is either really cruddy OR the motor itself could be bad.

Also I would check the connections at the solenoids. They can corrode as well.
