Re: Another leaking oil filter!

DHP, The motor does have a flame arrestor(rivited aluminum plate type), and the plastic shroud that covers the flame arrestor and the distributor was installed. I was (to say the least) shocked when the motor stalled. Looking back on it now, I suppose the water could have splashed on the distributor, shorting the ignition for a moment, causing the stall. It is still shocking that the bilge water could get to the top of the motor at all!

Also, I did not have much water in the bilge. My auto pump switch was working, and that leaves a small amount when it shuts off. I was simply in the ocean with 5-6 foot waves.

if u can reach under your oilpan chris even with just one arm.. smearing some old fashioned thick grease on it with a rag every so often is worth doing..

thick grease dont look pretty but it does stop things going rusty.. the old fashioned kinda stuff that goes semi-hard when its left would be the best..

only guessing here.. but i would think corrosion finishes off more boat engines than anything else does..

trog100

Don't be to quick to blame the bilge water! Some boats have a open grilled area facing to the stern platform area. Chaparral does, mine, Taking breakers once in a while in 5 to 6 ' sea could cause the flame out. I have had rain run into and down that area.----------I just read it's a 19' bow rider! In 5 to 6' waves? Heck- 3 to 4' fresh water waves puts a foot into my bow, head on, every wave. My bow is 3' above the water!! Gotta know when to say, no.

Rich, I hadn't thought about the vent grills. Mine are on the sides. I suppose water could go in there, and spray onto the distributor. It would be a stretch, I think, but not impossible.

The ocean waves were large "rollers", but far apart. You just go up and down with them, with nothing but some spray over the bow. When the waves are close together and steep, 3 footers can be an issue.

Trog, again excellent advice. Maybe I can stick my greasy hand under the pan. It is a bit of a reach from the front though, anyone know any out of work basketball players. They likely have the reach.

make sure there is no water in the oil, beacuse if there is what will happen is this, you will shut down the engine and if it is more than a week at a time, the water will settle at the bottom of the oil filter beacuse it is heaver than oil, thus making the rust. otherwise you have an external leak that runs right down the filter
