Another Mech. Question GRRRRRR

Ok here goes. I am in the middle of taking apart the lower unit. I am at the part where I am removing the "cover nut" it is the big circle nut that sits on top of the Prop shaft bearing carrier. In the Seloc book it doesn't say how to remove this. Well they kinda do by using all these special tools. Well I thought that to remove the nut I would use a punch and a hammer and tap the tangs counter clockwise and that should do it, but NOPE. So I WD 40'd it to death, I heated it I used the punch and hammer again and it still won't budge. Are these things reversed threaded, or are they just really hard to get out? Some backyard mech. help would be appreciated.

Re: Another Mech. Question GRRRRRR

Hi Ben,
That's one of those deals where you really do need the right tool. You might be able to manufacture one out of some pipe and access to a welder. The little tabs don't take much abuse individually but are plenty strong when all of them are grabbed by the tool.
The other problem is that those rings are aluminum, as is the housing, and they can corrode into place. I have sacrificed more than one of them for the sake of the lower unit - and my sanity, and I HAVE the right tools! New rings aren't terribly expensive at the dealership, so that may be an option for you...
- Scott

Hi again... One other thing to try. Might want to see if the mechanic at your local Merc dealer might just pop that ring out for you in trade for a sixer of his favorite pop or brew... Some mechs are cool like that - some aren't...
- Scott

Thanks for the reply Scott. I am gonna take your advice and go to the mech. and see if they will get the nut out for me, for a cheap price that is (hopefully) I really don't want to screw with this one. The purpose for me taking the lower unit apart is just to clean everythingup and get it working new again. I wasn't having any problems with the motor, well just a spun prop hub and the motor was sucking alot of gas (20L for about 6km of travel) so I rebuilt the carbs, distributor, and magneto. Then I wanted to replce the impeller and when I drained the oil it was really creamy, the color of coffee when there is too much milk in it. So I decided to look at the whole lower end. So would it be wise to take everything apart from the lower end?

There are usually some of those ring nut removal tools on ebay for sale for about $30.00.If you haven't actually seen one they show a picture of them also.Go to ebay.com and search on mercury outboard and there are a couple out there.I think someone in Texas and Canada are the sellers.

YOu could drill out the ring in two locations. Then it will fall out. Don't drill any farther than needed. Buy a new one for ....what?... 14 bucks??

Re: Another Mech. Question GRRRRRR

Well I took the lower unit to the Mech. and they pulled everything out for me, for only $40.00. I need a prop shaft (scored where the seals go) and a drive shaft (same thing) I bought the lower unit seals, with water pump o-rings and seals, well I got everything for $130.00. The prop nut had to be drilled out and the new one costed $5.95, not bad. So now I am in the midst of cleaning everything up and looking for a prop shaft and drive shaft, any ideas where to find one would be great!
