Another Newbie question

I'm sure this is a stupid simple question for most of you, but I am way to new to boating and hope you understand. I have a 1974 Sea Ray SRV 190. It has the Mercruiser 888 drive with the 302 Ford engine. Over the winter I picked up a used lower unit which appears to have not much use and the seller stated was his fathers and should be in good working order. I replaced the water pump unit in it and am ready to reinstall on the 888 upper. I have the unit in the forward gear position. What I need help with is making sure I have the shifter in the right position for forward for the reassembly. The shifter on this boat is a single lever that is round at the base of the lever with a single button in the center. It says Merc Control on the round part of the lever. What I don't know is the positions the lever should be in ( in or out ) for just shifting and for just throttle control. I don't have a manual on this old timer, and can't find one either. I did try using the search feature first, but no luck there. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Another Newbie question

Before you go popping that drive on I would have it pressure tested to be sure the seals are good.... I didn't do it to mine and it had been sitting a while....the seals dried up and sucked water into the drive.....now I am buying a new drive because I didn't check it out:facepalm:
Expensive lesson learned....

you can find a manual here http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf I think this is the one your looking for.

Just check your serial number on the third page.

When you push the button in the centre in, that disengages the shift mechanism... It's called a 'throttle only' button. To put the drive lower on, you will need the lower in forward, so turn the propeller CCW and the shift shaft CW. The lower is now ready. Push the shift control all the way forward (without pushing the throttle only button in)... Fit lower unit to upper... Just ensure the rubber and steel washers are in place on the lower shift shaft....

Thanks for the reply. I'm partially with ya. When you push the button in, the lever can be pulled outward. Is there a difference whether the lever is in the in or out position? Also, how do you put it in gear when it's already running and not throttle up at the same time?

How do you pressure test just the lower? I thought it had to be bolted to the upper? Like I say, I'm new to this. Thanks
