Re: Another November Splash

Awesome job. Those sure are cool little boats. I need to find one of those for my next project...before I start looking for a cuddy. I love your old Merc too. Mine has proved to be a reliable engine so I hope you have the same good luck. Congrats on the splash!

Re: Another November Splash

GA - Way To Go. A November splash is much better than no splash at all. I love the pic of the Merc 500. It's a great motor, I have a 1967 that runs like a swiss watch. It used to push our 16' FG 28 or 29mph. I think trimmed out you'll be pushing 35.

Your making me think maybe I should go find a nice smaller tinny like yours.

This is the first time on the water in over 10 years. It's fun again. After I got back Mrs. Boater told me she will go out with me. This is after she said nothing smaller than the QE II for her. Said she would have gone yesterday, but wanted to make sure it didn't sink. A vote of confidence - I think.

Re: Another November Splash

Thanks bunker and 64. She does run nice. Not knowing how long she sat I just went through replacing the things that deteriorate over time. The impeller vanes were cracked and the cup was grooved, so all new. Just rebuilt the fuel pump without looking at it first. When I opened it up the diaphragm was hard as a rock. The wiring harness (boat and motor) was in sad shape. But old Mercs are hard to beat! ;)

As much as I want an 18 ft. Holiday, the Nassau is really perfect for me. I'm not young anymore and I can horse her around. Nice and light - I can launch/retrieve by my lonesome. I'm going to go out as much as I can to tune her up before it gets too cold. Hoping for a test run Monday after I lower the motor a little. By Spring look out you little fishies!:D

Re: Another November Splash

Hey GA, how did I miss this? Congrats on the successful splash!

Maybe it's a ritual to sacrifice something to the water on the splash, you lost your hat, and I lost my best pair of sunglasses overboard as I tried to flip my camera strap from across the eyepiece!

That's a sharp looking Merc you've got there, what year is it? Goes great with the Nassau. I'm sure Mrs. Boater will join you when she sees how much fun you're having.

You'll have to put up an ongoing thread as you work on your seats, dash and all the other little goodies!

Nice job!

Re: Another November Splash

Thanks Lake. I went out this past Monday. The Merc is still running great. I was playing with trimming the motor. Wish I had power T-n-T. When I got back and pulled the plug - Yikes - a lot of water. Last time was dry or I was lucky. Looks like I'll be starting that thread. You know all about these things now. I'm learning. Lets see - Gluvit, foam and plywood and so on. Should I carpet or use Nautolex, I think I know that answer. I do have some ideas for the dash and seats, still mulling things over.

I'll be looking at your condensed, finished thread. Thanks for doing that. Heck I even look at glasser threads. Those guys in their misguided ways do some things that are worth seeing, just the wrong starting point. LOL

Almost forgot your ?. Merc is '66 500, same as the trailer and the Nassau. The Merc needs cosmetic work, after 45 years the paint is thin in spots (same as the boat and my head) but she runs really good. I plan on doing the carbs, just for peace of mind.

Re: Another November Splash

Forgive the short quote...I'm sure the Gluvit was a big help but after the amount of water I got in the bilge during the splash, I later cheated on it. I got underneath with a tube of 5200 while I was doing some work on the trailer and smeared it around several suspect rivets. I take leaks personally, but not enough to tear up that floor again! I'll have to wait until next summer to see if that helped, but it should be well-cured by then.:)

GA, I've got to agree with all who said the Robin's Egg blue is classic with the silver and black Merc.

The '66 vintage is a good one to have:D

I think the cover of the '66 brochures is one of the best photos, of a Holiday the same color.

Congrats on the splash, 10 year drought...never again;)

Re: Another November Splash

Lake - I was surprised that it was so wet this time. I'll put some water in it and see where the drips are and go from there. I know one thing - I won't fill it water. I saw some silcone smeared underneath so it probably had an earlier leak that wasn't fixed correctly.

HA - The black Merc with the stainless and aluminum trim is a classic look in my opinion. Only took a week before I was out again. :D
It won't be quite as fast for the third cause the weather isn't being nice. But it gives me time to work on a few things.

Re: Another November Splash

Before you do anything extreme. Double check the stern area .Loose screws. bolts need sealed and such. You can get a lot of water in with a very small hole. then check the Hull Outside, If the floor seems solid Id try any other source for a leak rather than remove the floor. If the bow is not extra heavy when drained check every thing else twice,If not the floor and such is a easy enough replacment. Just need a good place to work on it. and the time to do it.

Re: Another November Splash

I'm with you about going extreme, Puget. I haven't been able to look at it yet. But planning on not being surprised either. If I rip the deck up it's gonna be because it needs it. I'll be checking her all over for sure. Thanks for stopping by.

If I start a rebuild thread won't the Mob start to congregate outside my house chanting "Splash, SPLASH, SPLASH, SPLASH, SPLASH"?

GA your boats not big enough to get 103 pages and counting like J:eek: You could do it under 20 easy. And you still might beat him to splash time.;)

Sorry J:D

Re: Another November Splash

64 - I can do a complete gut and total resto in two posts. First is to say I'm starting, second post with finished pics and vid showing the results. It might be a month or 6 months or a year or two between posts. LOL

PS - I did drop the motor down to even it with the keel. Haven't been back out yet. I'll be letting you guys know the results when I do. I've been waiting for some goodies from Cyber Monday and other sales to show up, too. One thing that did come in is a tach. I can't tell what my WOT rpms are by ear. The last thing I want to do is blow up that old Merc so I pull back a little on the throttle to be safe. She does run good though.
