Would that 2.5 pull a horse trailer, large boat or even a 6,000lb camper up steep hills? Probably not, so would there be a difference in how the oils would break down, probably so.
The size of the engine and what it's used for is completely irrelivant. The 2.5hp with even a light load will be much harder on oil than a truck with a V8. The small engine will see 3-400 degree oil temps while a truck's oil temp will remain around 200 degrees even with heavy loads.

No problem, I'll roll out a red carpet next time, I doubt you'll be able to see it though :)

You drew 1st fire with your 1st post to me, with the  and the  . I took it that you were calling me the donkeys butt, sorry if I miss understood?

I didn't get mad I don't do that over the net not worth the waste of my health. If I get slammed I will answer back with a slam. I don't claim to know everything, but I do have some brain left and like to use it. I gave an opinion that can be backed up with facts, if I were talking out my butt then fine I'll eat crow, but atleast this time that was not the case.

I see no problem with having further debates, and of course I will try to remember the red carpet ;)

Correct the oil is on trial ;) . The fact to that is that 10w30 will break down before 30 weight, no matter which engine it is used in. So the verdict is in, 30 weight is a better{stronger} oil then 10w30 :) glad that is settled.

If you live in a climate that the temperature doesnt change much, use a straight weight oil.

I can probably use it in my car here in Houston.

If you want to be able to start your car in 20 degree weather, I suggest you put in multiweight or your bearings will wear out sooner cause the oil wont flow when cold.

Ken

Now that we have gone all through this about a 30W oil, If I had that engine in that climate, I would run a 15W-40 HDDO, (Heavy Duty Diesel Oil), all year around, with 5,000 mile change intervals and a Pure one oil filter. Probably Dello 400.

Re: another oil question

If you think I should use 15W-40, why arn't I using that for my other cars? I have been using 10W-30.

The winter is not as bad as you might think, the average low is around 25, but can go much lower sometimes. The summer is very hot around 100 most the time.

In Idaho where I am from, the winters are much worse and I used to use 10W-40 most of the time. I don't really know why, just did.

By the way, the '61 chev is restored to look very orig on the outside, but she sure is a screamer, I have a auto trans with duel exaust and headers, turns a lot of heads going down the road.

Thanks for the info, I will try the 15W-40.

Spud

Yes, it will, but like I said before, if your 10w30 breaks down then your oil change interval is too long anyway, or your engine is overheating. (or both)

There are a whole lot more factors than just weight and possible breakdown issues that make any oil "better".

Depends on what the other cars are. Large iron pushrod engines love thick oils. Small 4 and 6 cylinder engines with various aluminum parts and complicated valve trains like thinner oils.

Sort of true, but there are quite a few v8s out there now that require a 5W-20. These are roller cam and or overhead valve engines though and most 5W-20s that I know of are semisynthetics.

I think you will like the 15W-40 in your smallblock. I run it in all the older collector car engines in my bosses collection.

Interesting, I have a dodge neon that has been using nothing but straight 30 once it reached 35,000-40,000 miles. It has 160,000 miles and still runs like a top? I live in the adirondacks where the temp can change from 35 to minus 20 in a day. I have also owned many other 4 bangers and used nothing but 30 weight and they all ran till they were well into the 150,000+ mile range{when sold or taded they were still running great}.
