Ok, you can see in my signature what I'm running.

The recommended oil is 25-40 by merc.
The only place I can find that is with merc at $5 qt.
Does nobody else make that weight combo?
I see rottella makes a 15-40, I believe at wallyworld.
Would that ser-fice?
Then again...What would be the synthetic equivalent?

any thoughts?

thanks

Please not another oil thread.

If you don't want to use what is recommended by Mercruiser for your Mercruiser engine, then use anything you want, everything has been recommended and/or used by someone else and they say it works for them.
Just change it and the filter every 100 hours of operation or yearly with whatever, and you will be fine.

Re: Another OIL ?

How often do you change the oil in your boat? As Don says, 100 hours (few people put 100 hours a year on their boat) or once a year will keep it happy. If $35 or $40 once a year for oil is a significant strain on your budget, you might want to re-think your involvement in the boating hobby ..........

You can find lots of people that run their boats on any kind of oil imaginable and are perfectly happy with it. If you don't believe the manufacturers recommendation, from what I've seen you can choose anything else you like and somebody will confirm how good it is.

Re: Another OIL ?

Thanks for your response 45Auto. I change the oil twice a year here for the reason that I'm in a desert environment. Once at the beginning and then again at the end of the season. The cost is not really the issue. It's the having to go to that special place to buy that special oil that nobody else carries.

I was wondering why I couldn't run just straight 40w since I only take the boat out when the temp is 80* or above.

Sounds like you're way ahead of most people already, since you're changing it twice a year. If it's the hassle of going to a special place to get the oil, lots of places online will gladly ship it straight to your door. Order a case every couple of years, worst thing that would happen is you get out of boating and have $100 worth of oil to put in your ad as an additional incentive to the buyer when you sell the boat!

Are you familiar with the Mercury recommendation? It's here:

http://www.mercurymarine.com/serviceandwarranty/mercruiserfaqs/fueloil.php#1124

Read the NOTE just above the chart.
If you can't easily get the Merc stuff, any FC-W rated oil of the correct viscosity should be great. No reason in your environment you couldn't run the straight 40W.

From what I understand, the marine oils (FC-W) have some more stringent requirements (such as not rusting) than regular motor oil. Probably a good thing when you're pumping moisture into exhaust manifolds, etc. The NMMA FC-W requirements are here:

http://www.nmma.org/certification/programs/oils/fc-w.asp

Haven't really looked into the full synthetics. I'm similar to you, I change my oil a couple of times a year with the Merc 25-40 synthetic blend. I figure that's more than good enough and don't worry about it any farther.
