Another prop question

I'm brand new here but I have been reading posts here for a little while.

I bought a 1984 Mark Twain Costa Brava 25ft with a single 260 Merc right before the weather here turned cold. I got to take it on the lake one time for about an hour. I could tell right away this boat was not propped correctly. It seems to have a lot of slip and does not get up real well even though the motor seems to be pulling up. It also cruises at too high of an RPM. At WOT it revs to high also. In other words, it doesn't seem to do anything real well. I know it is a large boat for a single engine but it is not what it could be IMHO.

The specs as best I know and can come up with.
25ft 8 ft beam with a very deep hull and the boat is tall.
Weight in NADA is 5200 lbs. I think this may be a little on the light side.
5.7 Alpha 1 260 I/O with the prop pretty deep in the water.
15 1/4" x 15" Michigan Wheel prop in new shape.
Trim tabs.
Will carry 2 people most of the time but may have as many as 8 on rare occasion.
75 gallon fuel tank, large water tank in the bow.
Ran about 3500 RPM to maintain plane with the tabs down at just over 20 MPH.
WOT it would hit 5000 RPM at about 38 MPH.
I don't know how accurate the speedometer or tach are, but if I just went by feel and ear it would back up what they are telling me. I have boated for years and this is just one of many I have had, so I am not new to boating. This boat just doesn't feel right.

I looked at Mercury's prop selector and one of the selections is the Alpha 4 15x16. I am thinking about this prop. I am not to worried about top speed. I want it to plane out as slow of a speed as I can, have good cruising at a reasonable rpm, good handling and maneuvering and good economy. Don't laugh at the last one. Any suggestions.

Re: Another prop question

Thanks Triton! I have been using the search and will continue to do so. I thought maybe one of the prop experts would like to chime in too though.

Re: Another prop question

OK, I've thought about this, done a lot of searching on this forum and elsewhere, used the calculators and come to a conclusion. The boat seems to have pretty bad prop slip. It is a lot of boat for a single. I think if I can get the slip under control, the pitch the prop has now looks about right for the speed this boat should run. I don't think the boat will probably do much over 35, maybe 38 MPH. I am leaning towards a Solas Amita 14 3/4x15 four blade. That should help a lot with slip and if it will bring the slip down to 15%, it will be in the proper WOT RPM range.

Do the experts think I am on the right track or do you think the Alpha 4 15x16 that Mercruiser is recommending would be closer. I think it may be too much for the 260 to pull. Replies please.

Here is a photo so you get an idea of the size of this thing.

I've seen the Solas Amita recommended often.I think its a good bet.I think
the 4 blade will drop your rpm a little I'm thinking the boat is intended to run 4600-4800 rpm.

V2, Spike is right and I believe that the Solas Amita in a 15" pitch is an excellent choice for a better prop for your needs and uses. You will find that the boat rides higher in the water and you will be able to plane at lower speeds, as well as it should feel better when you are running and increase your acceleration at all speeds as well. It does depend on which particular model of michigan wheel you are running now, how much better your performance will be, but I guarantee you that you will feel and see the difference between the two.

Re: Another prop question

Thanks guys. I think I will probably go with the Solas Amita 4 15 pitch. It's got to be a lot better than what is on there.

To be honest, I have never much cared for any of the Michigan Wheel props I have had on other boats.
