Another propane question...

My neighbor's camper has a propane furnace as well as a propane stove. The furnace is vented to the outside. The stove isn't. Why is that? Don't they both put off the same exhaust fumes? He's stripping the camper and I was thinking about maybe putting the furnace from it in my garage.<br />Should I vent it? Seem's like a lot of heat going up the chimney. Thanks again

If you had a gas stove in your house it's not vented, right?<br /><br />The furnace is vented to remove the gasses from combustion. A furnace is normally run fro much longer than a stove. That is why you always hear to NEVER use a gas (natural or propane) stove or oven for heat. The reburned gasses make carbon monoxide and we all know what can happen with that!<br /><br />You definitely need to vent it outside if you use the furnace in your garage.

I can think of numerous propane heaters. Drywall dryers and the likes. I thought that it was more of a problem with oxygen depletion rather than carbon monoxide... or is it both? <br />And... isn't the by-product of burning propane water vapor and carbon dioxide.

Good point, Magster! O2 depletion is also a major problem. You are correct on the biporoduct. Carbon monoxide is produced when the flue products are re-burned . Meaning the gasses from the initial combustion are used again for combustion.

mag... those big heaters also say to use with lots of vetilation, and they are right, had a big one in my one car garage and it wasn't tollerable after it burned for a while.

Any burnt fossil fuel will produce carbon dioxide AND carbon monoxide.<br /><br />Dioxide (in large concentrations) kills by depleting available oxygen. Monoxide just plain kills - very bad. Both are odorless, monoxide is also tasteless, that's why people often die in their sleep.<br /><br />The less efficient the heater, the more monoxide produced.<br /><br />Ever driven a car with a leaking exhaust, ever get a headache while driving - that's monoxide.<br /><br />Aldo

Ok, if I get it I'll vent it. Do those ventless propane heaters you hang on your wall burn more efficiently or something, thus requiring them to be ventless? I was thinking about maybe getting one of those, but this camper heater really puts out (25k BTU) and it's free. Like new too. It was used very little because he said it produced way too much heat for the small camper, even when turned down low.
