I am getting different answers to this question on the AOMCI ask a member, so I thought I would post it here for some input. I need to know what type of lube goes in the gearcase of this 1946 Model 4409 Evinrude I believe it is stiff grease [like corn head] but not sure.I am also wondering if it is "stiff" grease, how much? pack it tight? or leave a air space? 1/2 full? One source is telling me that his manual for the 1947 model calls for 90w . Any help is appreciated

I can't remember the exact year of the one that I worked on a few years back but I do remember that it took chassis grease. You put a grease fitting in the lower plug hole and pumper it full to the top.

So, does it have Fisherman Drive? If so, it would appear it takes 90 weight Hypoid oil. Otherwise, grease.

mine has the 90 degree standard gearcase so it looks like stiff grease.

corn head grease liquifies itself under load but why not use 90 oil if seals are all good…

Design happened before "good" seals were invented.
