Okay about our 1978 Johnson 115hp motor.....we checked the compression and it is fine. I posted a second question under another one of my other topics. The problems we are having started when my husband pulled the plugs on our motor and cleaned them up. He put the plugs back into the motor and now the motor backfires throught the exhaust when we try to start it (not everytime but most of the time). My husband says one of the cylinders is missing. He did not gap the plugs before he put them back in as he did not think he moved them any. Anyway I want to know if this could be the problem...............

Make sure he put the plug wires on the right plugs. Each plug has its own coil.

okay, he figured out that the plug wires were switched and he fixed that and it fired right up. Now he is timing it and hopefully we will be off. we just bought this boat from a friend and this is our first experience with an outboard motor. Thank you so much for the help

yes you did rabidfish.......I should point out that my husband was told to check that and he did run out and look at it...in the dark...however after further inspection he realized the wires were labeled incorrectly and that the one that belonged on the top was actually labeled bottom. This is our first boat and we are struggling.

Just got back from the lake.....The motor ran great. The motor still slips when in full throttle, but we are going to look into the clutch dog and see if that solves our problem. However, all of our other problems are fixed for now....

Thanks again.....

Tell us more about this slipping issue at higher speeds. Are you experiencing a clunking symptom or is the symptom a smoothe rise in rpms and loss of forward speed.I'm considering the possibility of a spun propeller hub.
