Another question about year model.

Hi, i'm looking at purchasing a mercury tower of power, it's a 140hp with the distributor type ign and the serial number is 4602521, been to oldmercs and maxrules but still dont seem to be able to put my finger on what year it is, any ideas? Btw, the bloke selling it said it has no drive and thinks the problem lies between the crank and driveshaft, does this mean the the crank might be stuffed or is the driveshaft that usually lets go?

are you sure it's a 1400 and not a 1500. it looks like on old mercs that the number falls into 1500.

Not certain, only seen pics, on the side of the cowling it has 140 in red lettering but that is preceded by the word mercury in white lettering and the whole lot has a blue band underneath (the cowling may not be original), doesnt seem to have 1400 or 1500 marked anywhere on it. My gut feeling is it's late seventies just b4 they changed ign setup, does that sound about right?

Yeah could be, but it has PTT, not sure if thats original though.
