1973 hp, electric start.
all along i have known it had the switch in the control box so it wouldnt spin unless in nuetral. ive been having problems with it also cutting the power to the starter if i raised the warm up lever. last night, i finally realized that there is another switch on the motor and it is activated when you lift the warm up lever. What is the deal with this switch and can i bypass it??? The switch in the control box still works like it should but this other one wont let me crank with the lever up. i have a real hard time getting the motor to run. last night i taped the button down on this mystery switch, raised my lever and it fired right up. my motor needs a little lever to get it going but this switch wont allow it.

Simply ground the wire that leads to that switch on the engine BUT after doing so, make sure that the electric starter DOES NOT engage when your control box is in gear. If it does, then either the switch within the control box need adjusting or (no offense) you are mistaken about its existence, in which case, reinstall the wire on that switch at on the engine and adjust it.

thanks joe, i was hoping i could do that. i have not grounded it yet but with it taped down, the switch in the control box still does its job. I will try to get a pic of this other switch today. it mounts right against the pivot for the throttle linkage on the engine and only has a single white wire.

I know what that switch looks like. You did a good job of describing it. It's just a matter of that control box is not the one that would normally come with that engine BUT it is securely compatible.

o ok, well in most cases 2 would be better insurance and i would leave it alone but since mine at the engine trips when i raise the lever, i am getting rid if it and just rely on the one in the control box. i took it to the river yesterday and it work good. still wont crank in gear so the second switch is still working. man this thing cranks and runs nice after all my hard work bringing it back from the dead. it was last used in 1986. my neighbor is so jelouse that it fires up soon as you hit the key. many many thanks to this place and your write ups on rebuilding and adjusting carbs joe. here is a list of all the things i did to get it going.

1. cleaned everything, oiled cylinders, lubed anything that moves (had really good comression but no spark)
2. swapped out a bad timer base and spark plugs (now i got spark)
3. changed water pump and lower unit oil. also added pisser hose to top of crankcase
4. cleaned inside starter and added new brushes
5. rebuilt carbs.

I ran this thing alot yesterday and it was flawless all day. the thing im really happy about is that it didnt use hardly any gas.
