This was an article that was written up in our local newspaper about a Senior Citizen who was scammed. What the paper did not say was that a few days before, she got a call from someone selling her the bedding set. (see article below)

When they called her up she said she had saved her money and would order soon. These sleaze balls actually broke the door down and then took her money. I figure once they learned she had her money all they had to do was get into the house.

After I learned of what happened I got ahold of the Gazzette and told them I would Like to donate a new mattress to her. Owning a furniture store does help.

Well today I took her out an $800 set(retail on my tag and gave it to her. The newspaper covered it and if you could have seen her face it would have melted your heart. I wasn't looking for any recognition but it turned out the Gazzette did a followup story today while I was there. She had no children or husband but she told me the Lord was all she needed now.

To many times we tend to overlook how well we live and how there are alot of folks out there who have no one.

I willl show followup story tomorrow. My day is complete now knowing i made a difference in ones life.

Re: Another Scam

Darn good of you to help her out. Amazing what thieves will do. If they tried that with my 86 year old mother in law, they would have gotten hurt or dead, depending on her aim that day.

Re: Another Scam

Local scam victim receives helping hand, better sleep

By LOREN GENSON
Gazette Staff Writer

Today, 85-year-old Chloie Burnett will be feeling like a kid again.

That's because she plans to sleep until noon on her new mattress.

In September, two men who posed as representatives from the Home Energy Assistance Program robbed the Bainbridge resident of $1,800.

She had been saving the money to purchase a new mattress to aid the pain from her arthritis.
"I know people say money's not important, but I needed that bed or I wouldn't be saving so hard to get it," Burnett said.

Burnett's new mattress was donated by Jeff Wood of Mattress Etc. He said after hearing Burnett's story he wanted to do something to help.

"I'm excited to do something nice, it feels good," Wood said.

Burnett couldn't have been more happy with her new mattress and gave it a test drive when it was placed on her bed.

"Oh lord, this is comfortable," Burnett said. "I'm so happy because I didn't think anyone cared anymore."

Wood asked Burnett who wanted to charge her $1,800 for a mattress and she said it was someone over the phone. John Stultz, a Bainbridge member of Seniors and Law Enforcement Together, said the phone solicitor was likely part of another scam.

"A lot of these guys will go after senior citizens," Stultz said. "Many seniors do not report it because they're afraid they're going to lose their independence."

Burnett said although the home intruders stole her money she doesn't live in fear. Her home is situated near lands she and her husband farmed since 1951 and she doesn't plan to leave anytime soon.

"I am completely happy and satisfied in my little home," Burnett said. "It's paid for and I'm thankful for it. My heart didn't harden because of all of this."

Most importantly for Burnett, she said she now has a new person to count among her friends. Wood told Burnett to call anytime she wanted to chat.

"I like to talk on the phone," Burnett said. "I do have a lot of phone friends and that really helps to have people to talk to."

Re: Another Scam

A 'tip of the hat" to a deed well done..I had to contantly be on guard for my father the last several years of his life. When they find out you are old and alone they seem to think you are easy game. I had my father trained to say "I want to let my son and his wife review it first" That stoped the SOBs

Re: Another Scam

Thats the same thing we did with my wife's parents also.Scamers like to target old people due to the fact that thay are lonely and if you take interest in there lives. Most older people will give you anything thay can just to keep some kind of company.
