I always hear all these great things about Sea Foam. It was created in the 40's specifically for outboard motors. Anyways I got a Merc 650 that I have been working on, and I didn't have a chance to fire the motor up for a test run when I bought it because the lower unit was shot. I spent $650 on a 1986 16' Aluminum Starcraft on a galvanized roller trailer, with this motor and an extra lower unit, so even if the motor didnt run AT ALL, I would have been making out on the deal.

Anyways, it took a few times to get the motor to crank, seeing as it had been in storage for almost 4 years. The motor was running well at about 1500 RPMs with the muffs on, but when I tried to get it to idle, it wanted to stall out. I decided that before I do a total fuel pump, fuel line and carb overhaul that I'd give this stuff a shot.

Sooooo, I put about 1/4 bottle into 3 gallons of fuel/oil mix, and after I let it run for a few minutes, I turned the motor off for 15 minutes. Started the motor back up, and it idled perfectly for almost an hour. Once that was all overwith, I filled the tank the rest of the way with fuel/oil mix to flush the heavy amounts of sea foam out of the motor, and it ran so well, that I patted myself on the back for trying it before spending all the time for an overhaul. Grant it, that I will soon give the motor a full tune-up, it is nice to know that I can chill a little and do some fishin' instead of spending my Christmas time off working on the motor. Thanks Sea Foam!!!

Part two of this process is to continue to use Sea Foam (or any other fuel system treatment) in every tank of fuel at the ratio listed on the can. Keeping a fuel system clean is a continuous process -- not something you do only when a problem arises.

I don't care what appeals to others. I am not a Chemist and choose not to play with different types of Naptha slovents to find the one that my engine likes.

I started using Sea Foam after I kept seeing it on here, so for 50+ years of boating Sea Foam has been in ever tank of my gas for the last half dozen and it will continue to be there. It works and what it costs can easily be consumed in repairs were it not for it.

On doing the overhaul you mentioned, my (free) advice "don't fix it if it ain't broke". I have a rejuvenated 2 cycle tiller, weed eater, lawn mower, and chain saw that I had given up for dead (bought new ones) just to come along and run a test to see how good it was and rejuvenate all of them.

Yessir!!! Now, the only time that I think you would have a real hard time getting this method to work without a carb overhaul, is if THE MOTOR WONT START!! If your carbs are that gummed up that the motor wont pull enough through the carb to the cylinder to start, then the Seafoam can't really access all of the jets. I guess by that point it is definately time for a carb overhaul.

I don't know about Seafoam, as it's not availlable in shops here in my area but i have used OMC engine tuner, and Valv Tect marine engine de-carb. Both of these are much stronger and aggressive than the active ingredients in Seafoam ( I read the MSDS on all these products to see if they are the same, and they are not). At any rate, I discovered that they all loosen and dissolve carbon, especially the carbon that builds up and sticks the rings in the grooves. We have several vintage Yamaha 2-stroke twin street bikes ( RD200, RD400 RZ250, RZ350) and these products have saved me from having to tear them down to de-carb the pistons. On all my 2-stroke powere lawn equipment, chainsaws, outboards, and even my sons mini-bikes we use this stuff, with amazing results. I spray it directly into the hot cylinder at TDC, let soak for 15-30 minutes and replace the spark plug and ride for 30 minutes. Compression typically can go from 90 to 125 PSI, it's unbeliveable, but true. There are few products that can really be touted as a tune-up in a can, but this is an exception, and a good one at that!

Yess and welcome to the club. I never heard of it till I joined this site and after bringing a 2 cycle weed eater, garden tiller, chain saw, and 4 cycle lawn mower back from the dead, it is always in my OB fuel. My engine is a '02 and never has had a wrench on the engine/fuel system other than replacing a thermostat (non fuel related) and some broken throttle plastic linkage adapters (again, not fuel related). Ok so it's Naptha and Alcohol and Oil........fine.
