Another SeaKing 5HP ID Help (no tag)

I have what I believe is a late 60's Sea King 5hp Twin. There is no tag w/ model and serial#'s. Trying to get a better idea on what year it is to help in the rebuild. The only number I can find is on a silver cap/plug on the engine #776435.

Engine does have forward/neutral/reverse shift. I think it's a Gale but am not sure. I hope the pics help.

New to the site, but I have been reading it for a while. There's lots of great stuff here.

It is a Gale. Has to be between 1960-63. 1960 was the first year with fiberglass hood and 1963 was last year of Gale production. There isn't much difference in the three years involved.

Thanks F R, That should help me get started. I looked up some Gale info and see they didn't make it in 60, 3 models in 61, 1 in 62 and 1 in 63.

Need to new gaskets on the lower unit , most likely a new impeller and maybe new coils.

It starts and runs for about a minute then quits. My understanding is this only pumps water when in gear. Will the motor shut down if it gets too hot, or is it a coil issue? Or possibly both?

It should pump water all the time, the gear shift is in the lower unit and the water pump is driven off the shaft above that. Your problem is more likely the old coils heating up and quitting, replace the impeller too just for good measure.

ohm116, I started this up in a large bucket, in neutral had water flying all over, but there was no water cooling the engine.

My tinker till I break it instinct took over and I've torn the whole thing apart. The impeller looks great, I'm wondering if the inlet tube to the engine was not inplace and water was coming out the bottom vent.

I'm assuming the water will come out the same vent as the exhaust???

I'll also check to see if any of the ports in the motor might be plugged. When I popped the motor off, the gasket seemed to covering a couple of the cooling areas.

Picked it up a garage sale and the guy said it hadn't run in 30 years.

Sure enough I took a look at the coils and they are trash. I saw on Iboat they list 3 different brands about $3-4.00 spread.

Is there any one brand that is better than the other?

Its probably pretty much a toss up on the coils.I bought mine based intirely on price and the vendors record on ebay.I assume you know your motor shares many parts with its J/E cousins.

Back to the water pump, you probably didn't have it deep enough in the water, or too small a bucket/too much air bubbles.

Sure there was a 1960. I don't know where you got your information, but the models are:

1960 GG8822A (Gale 5D17)

1961 GG18736A (Gale 5D18)
1961 GG18736B (Gale 5D19)
1961 GG18736C (Gale 5D21)

1962 GG18736D (Gale 5D20)

1963 GG18801 (Gale 5D22)

The differences are minor. For instance, the stern brackets and internal parts of the fuel pump were changed in 1961, accounting for the model number changes there.

steelespike - Thanks for the advise - a coil is a coil at least for these, and yes thanks to this forum I figured out all my parts will be j/e.

F_R - I probably didn't have it in enough water.

Now that the motor is off, I was thinking i would hook up a drill to the shaft and see if the impeller is pumping water.

Your right, I double checked this list I was looking at.

Attached is a pic of my fuel pump. I've been looking but haven't seen one like it yet. I think I could use a rebuild kit on it.

Would this make it a '60 or '61-63? I'm hoping to find the right manual so I don't have to ask so many questions.

That fuel pump appeared in 1955 and was used right up through 1963. But internal parts for it have been obsolete for many years now. You are supposed to replace the whole pump. However, having said that, I have fixed some of them with the 18-7820 kit from here at iboats. Be aware that the pumps are not all alike inside and it may not work. A suitable replacement pump would be 18-7350 or 18-7351. Hose re-routing will be required.

That sounds like my kind of thinking "yea that just might work, yea thats the ticket"

Still need to try and get the model number / serial, any other great tips?

I received my parts from Iboats yesterday Thanks Iboats very good price and delivery, and yes I had checked a lot of vendors.

Cleaned and reset points and installed the coils, very easy. Next is impeller and putting her back together.

Question - Is there a specific gasket sealant that I should use when attaching the motor to the lower unit, or will a standard automotive cooling sealant work?
