1988 Astroglass 166v 17' bass boat.1988 90hp v4 vro.I need to try to figure out where to start with this.
It came with a hydrofoil (not hydrofoil brand) a 15"x13 3/4 alum. prop,a 17"x13 3/4 alum prop and a 19x13 stainless prop. Old owner said he put the 15 on it for the hole shot. is it worth putting a 4" spacer or jack plate on the moter and any Ideas what prop to start out with? or any other ideas.
Thanks

a Little more info. It does have power tilt/trim I took it for a short test drive (to cold to stay out long) It had a great hole shot.tach seemes wrong I will check or replace it. speedomiter way off.It showes about 4000 rpm wide open with 15" prop (my hat would not stay on wearing it backwards)

Re: another setup ?

Welcome!!

Ah, the 4 positions of a bass boater's hat--

Off (in hand, not on head)
On (on head, bill forward)
Lock (bill to the side)
Race (bill pointed back)

OK, to your questions. Youre absolutely correct. Lets get the tach issue straightened out first. The tach and water pressure gauge are our most important allies in this venture. Along with an accurate way to measure speed. GPS is preferred.

Once we get the tach fixed we can establish your baseline slip %. We'll go from there.

My guess is that at least some of your props are aluminum. That's OK. We just need to know what brand -- OMC I'd guess.

I'd also guess that eventually we'll benifit from a jackplate. But let's not worry about that now.

Re: another setup ?

Thanks
It may take a little while(it is suposed to snow this weekend).water presure gauge is on the way.
I cannot tell what brand the props are the 15" alum. part# is 391198 and the17" alum.has a (est) and part# 391199. The 19"is a stainless and I dont have a part# off of it yet but it has a black pouder coat finish and it also has alot more cup than both of the aluminum props.

Re: another setup ?

Both alums are OMC as Dhadley suggested...he doesn't miss very often.
The 17 pitch should be 13-1/4" (391199).
I'm just here to watch, so continue on!!!

Re: another setup ?

Just here to watch, huh? You just contributed so there goes your Peeping Tom theory..... :D

Anyway, it sounds like the ss prop is an OMC prop too. Thats good. Keep us posted on your testing.

Snow, huh? Well, good luck with that. I can't decide whether to go boating or to Daytona (Bud Shootout) or to the dragboat race this weekend.

Let's see....the race boat isn't done, I can watch the Shootout on the widescreen (and the BBQ is right outside) and the Hydra Sport is ready. I guess it's working on the Hydrostream Sat morning, the Shootout Saturday night and fishing on Sunday.

Re: another setup ?

I was out the other day and lost mine too but was able to capture it. But it was soaked and couldn't be worn.

Moral of the story; take 2 on a wintery day so that WHEN you loose the first one, you have a second to protect your head till you can get back to the dock. Grin

Or use a jacket with a hood and cover the cap so that it can't blow off......but then there is the problem of watering eyes to the point where you can't see....Ah goggles, but I keep forgetting them.

Mark

Re: another setup ?

Ok I got brave and it got up to 30 degree's.
Ok to begin with I raised the moter up 1.5" and put the 19 pitch prop on.I think the part # on it is 389510 (verry hard to make out)The hole shot is kind of slow about 15 seconds, water preasure at idle about 2 lbs. at wide open the water preasure is 13-14 lbs trimed out and the tach is showing 5000 rpm speedomiter is showing 35mph. I can trim the moter up alot more with it set this way about 3/4 going by my gauge (when it showes level it is up just a little)I have about a 2-3'rooster tail now No gps yet..
What should I try next..Thanks

Re: another setup ?

Today I put on the 15" pitch prop. boat ran 5200 rpm 31 mph with engine trimed almost all the way down. as soon as I start trimming up the boat would start porposing bad, if I tried to trim up anymore the prop would blow out. water preasure was about 12-14 psi.
