another starter problem??

24' 1995 Cruisers Aria 2420.
Merc 5.7 I/O

Actually, I don't think its the starter. Went to the boat yesterday, cranking really slow, wouldn't catch. Threw charger on for a bit, same problem. Started checking everything with the volt meter. Good voltage at the batteries and starter at rest and under cranking. OK-starters bad- Bought a new one, installed....same problem. Checked all electrical again, still reading good.

Any ideas on what else could be causing it?? Never had a problem before. Could this be the sighn of a much larger problem?? Almost seems like the engine has far too much compression or something. Pulled a bunch of plugs and checked out oil to find any evidence of overheating or non-lubrication. all seems well.

Boat is still a bit new to me, but has never had a problem like this before. Always started and ran beautifully before.

Re: another starter problem??

Pull the outdrive and try it again, could be a bad gimbal bearing or even the drive causing the cranking to slow down.
Didn't see any evidence of water on those plugs did you?
Was the alternator and circ pump turning? Seen them lock up and really slow down the cranking speed.

Re: another starter problem??

Thanx don, gonna try pulling the drive off, another friend recommended that also. all accessories were spinning. No water on plugs, later on I pulled them all and tried cranking... same sh*t.
Bondo, if youare referring to the battery ground wires, then I must admit I only gave them a quick glance and no real attention. They are def. not corroded and are looking OK with anti corrosion gel on them. Other than that, I don't know what you mean. The little grounding strap on the starter? Replaced the starter, so it's brand new.

Re: another starter problem??

One more thing all.
Spoke with a mechanic buddy of mine. Said it might be that the batts. have OK voltage, but not enough amperage (I never actually checked this) And when I tried putting them on charge I was sending a bunch of volts into them but not enough amps.
Anybody think this sounds like a reasonable theory? Iwas gonna wait till the weekend to try sorting all this out again, but if this really could be the cause, I'll run down tomorrow night and check it.

Re: another starter problem??

Get them load tested, that's the only way to really check a battery.
