Another starting problem, 91`175 h.p. Black max

I know I have several post for this motor but I discovered another problem while trying to start this motor after 3 months of not running, actually happens evrytime i start it after not using it after awhile. So I do the usual steps, pump the ball, push the flat lever all the way up, push in the choke and turn the ignition on and that's when I hear a hmmmmmmm. Looks like the starting wheel isn't raising up to the fly wheel. I have to do the last step several times before I get a crank, but when I do get a crank, it doesn't start right away, sometimes it starts up revs high and just dies then I go through the process again. I go through a couple batteries before I get it started. Once its started and running for awhile its fine but its the initial morning start that sucks and embarrassing. Please help me out on this I'm trying to avoid taking it to the shop because boat repairs are not in my financial budget. What should I replace or check myself? Tune up? Change batteries, starter? Let me know, thanks.

Sir you are telling us of a "time to be retired" battery. If the battery doesn't have adequate amperage capacity to spin the starter bendix fast enough to engage the flywheel and turn it, it will do as you say. Your comment as to the rest of the day just reinforces my remark as you ran the engine, putting some charge in the battery and temporarily overcame the problem.

The start and dieing you mentioned very well may be battery related or you just didn't get the engine to run long enough to get the mechanics of combustion up to what it takes to keep it running. Go to WW and have your batteries load checked. If good, they will put out 200 amps and maintain 10 or so volts in the process....if good.

The starter drive is 'screwed' up into position against the flywheel by inertia, the quick spin of the motor threaded shaft vs the weight of the drive. It the starter motor is dragging or slowed by any combination of poor connections, weak battery, or dirty starter brushes, the motor will not accelerate quick enough for the drive to function correctly.

Start with the battery, is it fully charged? How old is it? Any question to the battery age then take it somewhere to be load tested to be sure it is in serviceable condition. Clean all cable connections, BOTH ends, clean, bright, and tight, including the starter cable and the starter to motor mount to make a good ground connection.

Note cranking speed, then by pass the starter relay with battery jumper cables, if cranking speed is now greater then replace the starter relay.

Disassemble the starter and lightly sand the armature clean, take care not to create any flat spots. Lightly lube the bushings with lightweight grease or oil. Clean and dry the threaded section of the starter shaft, use no grease or oil here as it tends to collect dirt and cause the drive to stick. Silicone dry lubricant is O K.
