Could you use plastic wood for your stringers? I was just curios if they would be too heavy?

Re: Another String question

Check the thread "pics of work so far" John used some composite lumber for his. They are heavier and from what I have read they arent as stable as wood over the long term but there is no reason not to use them as long as resin will bond to the material. That being said, I dont know that I would do it personally just because wood is...wood and has been used forever for load bearing. Tried and true is always a good way to go.

Re: Another String question

This is a common question

The issue with most types of composite boards is that they are heavy, weak, costly and resins don't bond that well to them. Since they can't provide any structural strength, you need to increase the laminate covering them to support the entire load, again increasing the cost and weight.

If you increase the laminate covering a wood stringer to take the entire load, then it makes no difference if the wood rots away. Wood is cheap, easy to work with, light and readily available in many sizes and types.

There?s nothing stopping someone to from using composite boards, they just aren?t that great of a product.
