another stuck gimble bearing question

I cannot pull the gimble bearing out. The motor is out of the boat, but there is a grease seal pressed into the inner transom plate preventing it from being driven out from inside.. Is there a way to remove the inner seal without destroying it? Or is there a secret to pulling the bearing.

Thanks.

I made a similar puller once out of a welded up "T" and length of chain and flat aluminum plate.

Mike-
WAIT... STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't use that puller until you have read this. The gimbel bearing is not square edged but rounded because it rides "around" as you turn and go up and down with the trim. If you look inside the bellows you will see there is a notch in the bearing housing (held in with a snap ring) at about 2:00 o'clock and 5:00 o'clock. Because of an indefinite way to install that, it may not be at 2 and 5 but certainly when you find a notch, 180 from that is the other side. Turn the bearing in it's housing so all you see is the edge of the bearing faced toward you with the bearing edge lined up with that notch; then just pull it out. You need no puller and in fact will hurt MUCH if you use it with success. All you need to change is the gimbel bearing, not the housing (unless you have screwed it up or it got screwed up some how.) Without pictures this may be hard to understand but look inside and study the bearing and housing you will see what I'm talking about. Goo luck!

No Mike,... Keep Goin'....
You're doing it the Right way, replacing the Complete assembly called the Gimbel Bearing....

The outer race that "G" is trying to Save is a disposable piece...
And, if the bearing is installed properly, the slots are facing Forward...
I also wouldn't loose any sleep over that Seal.....

Btw,... 'nother Cool Tool BD......;)
Is the 1 leg slotted,..??

WAIT! STOP!!

Before you do what "G" suggests you might want to look at the factory service manuals and procedures. Been a LONG time since Mercruiser recommended just changing the bearing and not the carrier. The bearings and carriers are a matched set and should be changed together. Here's the bulletin from the #1 drive (70's and 80's?? As I said, before my time).

http://www-alt.mercurymarine.com/mne...t/85/85_26.pdf

And here's the page from the Alpha Gen II manual (#14 I think). Note the first sentence on the page, right after the word IMPORTANT:

I wouldn't change only the bearing and not the carrier unless you REALLY like changing gimbal bearings and want to do it again soon ....

As Bond-O says, the correct factory procedure is to install them with the slots facing FORWARD just so you can't do what "G" suggests.

Seeing the notches will depend on what direction the gimbal brg was installed if it's been changed before. It can be changed this way if the notches face out. With the proper puller and installer removing and replacing the whole thing is a non event. I don't know what your trying to say he "will hurt much if you use it with success". As a long time Merc/volvo/former OMC certified tech I can tell you they are pulled with the puller on a very regular basis.
