I would not use a petroleum solvent....... regular motor oil would probably be ok but soap is just as good...... but nothing will be there after it runs in water for any length of time...... That's why you cannot run it dry for even just 30 seconds.

Wow, let's not recommend the use of motor oil and then going out to run it in the lake. Just one liter of lubricating oil can contaminate one million liters of water. Just something to think about...

If you are going to hook it up and run it right away just about anything. I like silicone spray.

NOW here is the easy way to put the impeller and housing together....

Put the impeller on the shaft and all the way down on the base. Don't forget the drive key, pin, gizmo.

Spray with lube. My preference is silicone spray as detergent as such will get sticky (if it is not run right away) and may damage the impeller.

push housing down over impeller while turning the vertical drive shaft clockwise
(from the top). The blades will eventually fold up in the housing the right direction.

If you have some problem with the drive key "glue" it to the shaft with a little grease.

Yes. I have heard a raw pump on a hose make noise if the blades are backwards.

Two cycle oil is processed during the combustion process to a degree and most of the residual is released into the atmosphere via the exhaust. Granted, some of the two cycle oil likely makes its way to the water column, but it is irresponsible to suggest coating the impeller with straight oil and then going for a run in the lake. I?m not saying any of it is the best for the environment, but when there is certainly a more eco-friendly alternative (such as any water based lubricant) why on earth would you use MOTOR OIL?! Be responsible and don?t dump motor oil into the lake where I fish.
