I have an 85 90eltco that I am having a hard time getting a tach to operate. first question: how many poles does the alternator have, I am under the impression it is 12 which in turn has the dial on the back set to 6, is that correct. question 2: three wires are battery/ground/sender. do the battery wire and ground wire return to an instrument post of positive and negative or does the red(positive) jump to the resistor on the trim gauge? Question 3: what is the wiring for the tilt gauge? I have the factory manual but cannot find any info answering these questions. If anyone has any other personal knowledge on these topics, please chime in. Thanks in advance.

The positive needs to go to +12 volts and you normally daisy-chain the positives from all the gauges, ending at the ignition switch.

Ground is ground. They can be daisy chained from one gauge to the next (the easy way) or you can "star" connect everything (the hard way) where each ground runs separately to wherever ground is on your boat. The trim gauge is wired exactly like the fuel and tach. +12 volts from any other gauge, ground from any other gauge, and sender is the trim sender on the engine.
