Re: Another thread Got me thinking

A simple way to think of it is: Do you think being able to stop is a good idea? If so, is stopping faster better than stopping slow?
Personally, with a 21' boat I'd be wanting brakes. Also with an 18' boat.

4000lbs is the limit in NC

4000, really? The sticky with the state towing link at the top says NC is 1000#. That is the same link as i posted earlier. Wonder why the discrepancy..

if your truck weighs 4k+ lbs, can have 1k lbs inside and is rated to tow 7k+, I think you're ok with the 4 disc brakes your truck has! I get unlimited brake pads from autozone after buying their top of the line pads, would rather change pads more often on the truck than have to deal with trailer brake systems which are pretty flimsy compared to the one on the truck. Plus, they get submerged, they seize, I mean if I was towing a 5k lbs boat cross country, maybe.. otherwise it's not worth the hassle

Not worth the hassle? Well when its the law, it is REQUIRED. That means not optional. Why even chance it? Its just a few bucks in the overall cost of boat ownership.

As mentioned before, 1000lbs is for RV/house trailers only. For all other trailers the limit is 4000 lbs. The sticky is for RV trailers. This 4000lb limit was previously 3500 lbs but the state has increased it. The old rule was they would allow 500 lbs over for a margin of error. The new rule simply states 4000lbs max. The DOT spot checks commercial vehicles but does not target boat owners unless it looks grossly negligent.

Is this a tandem axle trailer, if not you do not need brakes in NC. What lake are towing to? From Bragg to Jordan Lake it is a flat easy drive once you get on US1. Since you are in the military and if you are transferred to another state you will have to check the regs for that state AND the states that you will be crossing to get there. Be aware of the dynamics behind you and adjust driving accordingly. Pay attention, drive slower than normal, increase following distance and try to anticipate other drivers actions.
