Another Trim/Tilt Problem....Merc 1150.....

I'll cut to the chase on this one. My trim unit on my '72 1150 is only using
3 hydraulic hoses instead of 4. This is the way it was when I got it.
2 hoses for the UP cylinder, and 1 hose for the DOWN.

Under the pump where the hose fittings go I had a leak on the single DOWN
line (UP has 2 lines). It just wouldn't tighten up enough and it was leaking
fluid (this is before my current problem).
So I moved the hose fitting over to the plugged hole where there is supposed
to be another down hose and used the plug for the leaking hole. Everything
was fine, no leaks and everything worked.

When I touched the BLACK to the -neg of the battery and the GREEN to the +pos it would tilt down, BLUE and it would tilt up. Working fine when touching the motor wires directly to the battery.

NOW when I wired the unit back up I tilted the motor all the way up.
When I tilted down the trim motor started making a buzzing noise like the
pump is spinning but not pushing fluid and it will not tilt the motor down.
When I push the UP button it makes a different smoother sound like it always
did..
I opened the fill hole and watched as I hit the buttons and it is moving the
fluid, but not tilting and still making the buzzing sound.

Does this have something to do with there being only one hydraulic line for the DOWN cylinder? Can it be that the motor is simply not strong enough for this unit?
HELP! CONFUSED AND TIRED OF HAVING TILT PROBLEMS!

the cylinders are part of the storage system for oil, if you have filled the pump in the up position as you must and the pump won't bleed itself you should put a tee in the down system if you can't the second down hose to stop leaking, that will restore the capasity to the system

Well there was never a second down hose on it since I've had it. It has worked normal except for having to replace the tilt motor about a year ago with another used one. I just don't see why it is doing it now.
Like I said it working fine by touching the motor wires straight to the battery, but just started with this problem since I wired it back with the solenoid and harness to the switch.

Doesn't that system have two trim/tilt cylinders mounted outside the transom clamp? If so, doesn't it require two hoses (large and small diameter) on each cylinder?

Yes. But tI guess the guy who had it before me plugged one hole in the DOWN cylinder and it is using just one hydraulic line. Also on the hydraulic pump where the 2 lines connect there is one hole that is plugged where there is supposed to be the other line.
So it had been working with just one DOWN line.

merc 72 if your cylinder that is plugged is any good, were does the pressure in it go when it is run in the other direction

The cylinder has 2 ports for 2 hoses. It is using only 1 hose and the other port is plugged.

I un-wired the trim pump and connected the motor wires directly to the battery, still doesn't tilt in any direction.
Can my motor be stuck since it is tilted all the way up?
I have tried turning the manual release knob on the pump but it does nothing, my manual says it only works if the motor is down anyway.
I took the pump motor apart and checked to see if the shaft was going into the pump correctly, and it seems that it was since I don't see how it could jump out.
I put it back together and tried it on the battery and still the same, just the motor spinning.

Any ideas??? I don't know what else to do except buy a whole new trim/tilt unit but I don't want to spend that much.

Merc72, if the motor is just spinning and it won't go up or down, some of the replacement motors came with a short shaft with a plactic coupling and a extention that coupled it to the pump, maybe it's one of them and the coupling sheared   Bob

Re: Another Trim/Tilt Problem....Merc 1150.....

Well I was under the impression that one cylinder was for UP and the other cylinder was for DOWN. After going through the manual real close I now realize that each cylinder has an UP AND DOWN hose.
The one cylinder that I said was plugged actually isn't. The threaded part where the hose connects is actually broken off.
So I don't know how it has been working like it has before.
Should I maybe try to disconnect the other hose for that cylinder and try to plug either the end of the hose or find a plug and plug the port on the pump? Where only one cylinder would be working.
Could the tilt work using only one cylinder?

I do not think the trim would function on only one trim cylinder. The unused one would stop the used one from working.

Probably the trim pump hydraulic hose fitting is stripped or the cylinder hydraulic hose fitting is stripped. You need to find out which one is bad. If it s the cylinder, check out junk yards, eBay and dealers for used trim cylinders, or aternatively find an NPT to flare reducing nipple and retap the cylinder to accept it.

It would tilt on only one cyl. but probably not have much power to trim on only one. As long as the up is hooked up on both cyl and the down is on only one. As long as the other cyl is vented by the down hose not being hooked to anything it should work as long as there is enough oil to supply the pump
