WOG, two questions. When you buy the vinyl does it already have the foam inside the two vinyl pieces? And when you install any carpet, do you use only glue or glue with staples? I will hopefully soon be installing the carpet on my boat project and was wondering. I can see glue on most things, but was wondering if you use any staples as well? :noidea:
You CAN buy the vinyl with the scrim foam already attached. Typically it will only be 1/4". These seats called for 1/2" scrim foam soooo, I glue the foam on myself. Depending on the application carpet can be installed either way...Staples or Glue. On the doghouse they used both, glue on the inner portion and staples around the edges.

If I told you EVERYTHING, then you'd be an OLD DUMB OKIE just like me!!!!:D:eek:;)
Actually, YOU were the one that stimulated the thought of How to sew Pleats on the top side without having to mark them with pencil etc... YOU said your machine did a better job on pleats if you sewed on the good side instead of the scrim foam side. Soooo...it got me to thinking of how to do it, and...This Old Dumb Okie came up with using masking tape. It works GREAT!!! Sooo, thanks for making me use my noggin for something besides a Hat Rack!!!!

HAHAHAH... I remember that conversation. Glad could help!!!!

Finished the Dog House and Bow Seats. Dog House was a PITA!!! 7feet wide, 3feet deep and 3 feet tall. HEAVVVVVVVY!!!! Hard to get it up on the bench. Had to skin the hinge and the back of the Glass. Side by side seat backs cover it and theres a seat back that goes on top of thewood table. I left it plain so the owner can stain and seal when he does the rest of the wood on the boat. Bow seats are hinged for access to storage. They were easy to do except for the HATED pleats!!!

Thanks for making this thread. They look great. I am not far away from my own interior project. I am afraid you are making this look too easy WOG. I might need to be added to prayer lists when I start. My old sewing machine and I have a hate-hate relationship. I think it is because I hate to oil her.

Did you have to repair any foam?

Yes I repaired a couple of spots. It's really quite simple. Cut out the bad part then cut some foam of the same density, a bit larger than the cut out and then use an electric carvin knife to re-form the shape. I got my Black & Decker knife at Walmart for $10 bucks and it works Great!!!
What machine do you have?

WOG, my sewing machine is a Brother LS-1217. Not sure it is designed for this type of work, but she does a mean stitch on an old sock, IF (BIG IF) it is in the mood. :)
Where would you suggest to look for the foam? Hobby lobby, maybe? I will grab one of those knives for sure.

Waiting on samples of Marine vinyl now. Hope I am not hi-jacking your thread.

WOG, great information as usual. Very nice work. Please keep posting your little secrets and tips. My wife and I love them. Ever think of some youtubes?

Sunken Ship, We get our form locally from fabric shops like JoAnns or most recently, we have a place called Mill Outlet here in Raleigh, NC. They have a great selection of not only foam, but marine vinyl and canvas. You may have an outlet type place in your area.

Well that's an OK machine but prolly NOT what you need. Industrial Walking foot IS the best but They run $300 UP for used and $1,200 up for New. Brand names are Consew, Juki, Pfaff, etc...Best HOME style machines to use are those from the 40's or 50's. Reason being that they are all metal construction. NO Plastic Gears. The models I recommend are...Singer 15-91 and the Singer "Godzilla" 66-18. They are VERY strong performers and will sew thru 6 layers of vinyl with little effort. You can buy these on Craigslist for between $25-$150. I have both of these machines and paid $85 total for both of them $50 for the 15-91 and $35 for the Godzilla machine. Both work Fantastic. If you find one, I have all the Manuals and details on how to repair them or tune them up to ensure top notch performance. Where are you located?

Watch these... Godzilla

I've done some but I sound like what I am!!! Just and Old Dumb Okie!!! I LOOK even worse.:D I think I'll just keep posting on here and leave the You Tube videos to FriscoBoater!!! Here's another tip I've learned. Staple your Boxing to your plates and especially the corners. This will keep everything in place and Really help avoid puckering and or wrinkles. This is the one I use...http://www.ebay.com/itm/Manual-Hand-...-/371280811359

WOG, this info is more helpful than one might imagine! Been scouting the market for a machine over the past two weeks like a deer staring into headlights-I see one but I don't REALLY know what I am looking at. I am pretty sure that my current maching and I might end up at war if we were to try this project together. Wasn't sure about the older Singers, but will start looking for a deal on one of those. I called about a Juki this morning for $150, but the guy hasn't called me back yet. We do have a few Singers on craigslist, maybe I will run them by you as I go. 30 minutes North of Nashville.

Thanks MJ! Gotta start getting supplies. Vinyl supplier is taking forever getting me the samples. Trying to start acquiring materials now while doing smaller projects to the old boat..

OH WOW!!! That could be a WINNER!!! Do you know what model it is???
No, I called the guy a second time this afternoon and he said he was busy. I called and asked which model and he said he was not there at the machine. Supposed to call me back. Was hoping to go in the morning and pick it up.
