So seahorse are you saying the mechanic lied to me -- I am very skeptical of these guys -- BUT i SENT THE PUMP BACK TO jOHNSON AND THEY TOO SAID THERE WAS A HOLE IN THE DIAPHRAM ---

SO HOW COULD IT LOAD THE ENGINE UP WITH OIL

and no I never had a honda but last summer had some problems with this engine ( the JUNK JOHNSON ) and posted

Re: Another VRO question!

Bill S1K,OB,Dhadley,
I've recently opened up a can of worms with this VRO situation.I've looked at all fuel lines for leaks? Hard to tell other than they feel quite hard, brittle and probably original e.q.
The VRO diaprahm that was refereed to in my previous post, am I correct in assuming that the small cylindrical item is located and mounted to the backside of the air filter shroud that attach's to the face of the twin carbs?
I can identify which line is the oil line going in to this item( for lack of the proper term,is this the VRO pump?)would you therefore disconnect the oil line at this point? If the VRO is not in use, is there still a need to send all the fuel lines through it or can they be re- rounted directly to the carbs? Thanks T-290

Re: Another VRO question!

Sounds like you've got it located. The VRO pump will have 4 hoses attached and an alarm wire harness. One oil inlet ,one fuel inlet, one fuel/oil outlet to carbs, and one crankcase pulse. To bypass the VRO simply disconnect the wire harness from VRO at its plug-in connector.Remove the oil inlet hose and securely cap off the nipple.Trace the two low oil sensor wires from remote oil tank to engine compt. and disconnect.Either completely remove the oil reservoir and its hose from boat or plug off the disconnected oil hose and leave it installed.Mix 50:1 in fuel tank and with the fuel inlet line on the VRO disconnected pump the primer bulb until you can visually confirm that fuel mix has reached pump.Reconnect fuel line to VRO pump. The pump should work fine as a 50:1 pumper and at this point the VRO alarms will be disabled.

You'll want to locate the tan engine overtemp sensor wire and with the ignition key in the "on" position(engine not running)ground this wire to the engine block.Overtemp alarm should sound. This will assure that you have not disabled the overtemp sensor.

If any or all of the fuel lines are dry and brittle it would be a good time to replace with new.Good luck.

Re: Another VRO question!

Beautiful OB,
I have a much better understanding,I previously had no idea that the VRO pump in addition to mixing oil/gas was also the fuel pump! I get it now! There is one small line 1/4" that comes across to the oppposite side of motor and hooks up to another small cylindrical object, looks much like a starter from a fluorescent light bulb,it has a small red indicator type dial on the face of it.(Is that a vacuum line of some sort, would that be the primer for the carbs) Thanks T-290

OB,
I stand to be corrected there are 3- lines going to that cylindrical object opposite the VRO not one as I previously posted. T-290

Re: Another VRO question!

That is your engines solenoid fuel primer. It is normally activated by pushing the keyswitch in which allows fuel to bypass the carbs and flow directly to the intake chamber. The red lever on the side of the solenoid is a manual prime lever in the advent of electrical malfunction of the solenoid. The normal position of the red lever is end facing aft inline with the body of the solenoid. The manual prime position is red lever perpendicular to the solenoid body.

Re: Another VRO question!

OB,
I have tiller steering on the 40. It has a small primer bulb built into the tiller arm for manual priming so if I understand you correctly it should be perpendicular to the solenoid body for manual prime (yes). If in the event the VRO pump should fail, I would then lose my gas supply to the engine. What would I replace it with, does Bombardier/Johnson offer an electronic fuel pump? If so what happens to the pulse that is recieved from the engine that drives the existing VRO pump?
I'm sorry for asking so many q's please excuse me for I'm just a carpenter and if I can't drive a 16 penny nail into it with my hammer I'm in trouble !!!!!! Re: Another VRO question!

First question is yes.Place the solenoid lever perpendicular for manual prime. When your VRO pump is in need of replacement your local John/Rude dealer should be able to fix you up with a conventional 50:1 fuel pump that will utilize the same crankcase pulse drive method. You can also get a rebuild kit for the air motor and fuel segment of the VRO pump.

OB,
Thank you sir, I greatly appreciate your solutions! Thanks for hanging in there with me.Based on your answers I get the feeling that you do this for more than just a hobby. I just have to ask if this is your profession?
Thanks for all T-290 :)

Nope ,Not an outboard pro by a longshot.Just a guy whose worked on machines most of his life and likes to know as much about them as he can.I reserve outboard pro titles to several other members of this forum who once you know them, like EF Hutton, people listen. Thanks for the vote of confidence though. ;)
