i'm looking at the sierra pumps for 40 h.p 2 stk (2004) noticing they don't come with the housings (# 18-3394) is there a kit that does come with the housing or do you have to buy them separate? or where can I find that part # for the housing ? thinking I want to change the pump assy. thanks

marine engine.com shows the housing, part #5031416 for $86.72. But it says out of stock. Other than that, I couldn't find the housing in a kit

Do you need the plastic housing?? Yep, iboats does not list the housing did you break yours? Just order the whole kit and it has everything but the housing

In most cases a fresh impeller is all that is needed.

But if the housing is busted, it needs to be replaced. I have a couple of old ones (these are metal) that are chipped or otherwise can't be used. Damaged plastic ones are probably worse. You might try to locate a NOS unit on a shop shelf somewhere.

Many good water pump housings are thrown out.---------------Dealers prefer to install complete kits because-------When a bill shows $25 for parts and $100 to install folks complain.----When it shows $ 89 for parts and $100 to install they don't complain.

Yeah, probably means can't sell 'em or give them away either as a dealer, without getting into some kind of trouble. Hard not to get cynical over stuff like that, particularly if the parts are scarce or will get scarce (like that impeller housing, apparently). I know I've seen that kind of thing happen with car repairs I've had done, but then I probably didn't have any particular interest in the old parts that went away.
