Another water pump thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Help.............................I have a '65 9.5 Johnson. I've had the lower unit off and on like 5 times after replacing the impeller cause it will not pump water. Very simple process, or so it seems any ideas?
I might add the reason I changed it is because it quit pumping and got hot, don't think it over heated as I shut it down quick.

Yes, stop taking apart and putting together. You had to have gotten it right once.

Drop it one last time. Place it in a bucket of water and spin the down shaft by hand. It should pump some water. Not much, but some if it is working. if not, open the housing and make sure the pump is turning with the shaft, not slipping.(water pump keyway in place)

If so, move on to the next possibility.
Block plugged up? connect a garden hose to the motor side water passage and run water through the motor. If it runs through, good deal. If not you need to pull the head and clean out the passages.

Make sure the steel cup the impeller rotates in did not twist and rotate to a position that blocks the water flow up the tube.

Actually the most common reasons pumps don't work are:

1. Water pump housing worn out.

2. Air (exhaust) getting into the intake side of the pump. Usually because the plate isn't sealed to the gearcase. Can also be caused by clogged bleed hole in the pump housing. Or see #1.

3. Running it in a bucket. You aren't doing that are you?

4. Peculiar on 9.5's--did the water tube pull out when you lowered the gearcase? If it did, you can't get it back in without many hours of work.

The trick of turning it with a drill is ok, except for a couple of reasons--there is no air or exhaust present. See #2

Chrome plated impeller housing cup with the locating lugs on it.
That steel cup, at least that is what all mine have had. Item #63 in the gearcase section for my current motor.

With all do respect, are you certain you have enough water in the barrel? Many times that is the only reason for a lack of good water flow. Fill your barrel so the water level is well up, 1/2 way or more, the leg. Best of luck. Rick.

We are talking about a 1965 9.5hp here. Unless they have come out with a plastic pump with stainless liners since I last looked (very possible), it has an aluminum pump housing. Perhaps you are thinking about a 9.9hp?

F_R in your first post you ask if I'm running it in a bucket, yes I am as it seems to me to be the only and most reliable way to ensure good water flow. And I don't think the muffs fit. Also the housing is aluminum.
Rick, yes I use plenty of water, I use a metal garbage can. Thanks.

F_R, another thing I noticed in your post in item #2, was your comment on the plate not being sealed to the gear case. With the plate on first then the impeller then the housing bolted down doesn't that secure everything?

Could be your thermostat is not passing water stopping up the water flow. Easy thing to check.

My comment on that was aimed at the possibility that there might be crud or corrosion or something between the gearcase and plate, admiting air. Those are great water pumps, but lousy air pumps. It is good practice to clean it well and apply a bit of sealant under the plate to ensure an air tight seal.

As for the container, if you had it deep enough to submerge the pump before startup, it should be ok. You see so many guys sticking the lower unit in a five gallon bucket and expecting it to pump---it usualy won't.

Update: I thought a lot about what crxess said about quit taking it apart. I told myself this was it, last time. Dropped the lower end stuck it in the bucket, turned the shaft as fast as I could, still no water. Took the housing off put the old impeller back in put the thing back together in the bucket w/o the tstat and I'll be, water....................put the tstat in and hmmmm still pumping water. ???????????????????????????????/
Don't know where to go from here but I sure learned how to take one of these things apart.

So if I follow correctly you are back to the original set-up of the old impeller and thermostat in and now it is working. Changing the impeller didnt improve the situation -- I would think that is because they are the same. It seems to me that removing the thermostat then moving water is what fixed the problem.

Clearly you are going to have to take it apart again, put in the new impeller and see if it still works if you want to figure out what fixed the problem (and know if you have the right new impeller). By the way, have you tested the tstat in hot water to see if it opens correctly? Also easy test. I'll bet it does. I think you had crud it the tstat housing cavity and when you took it out you cleared the clog.

The only difference in the impellers was the old one seemed to be just a fraction thicker towards the center. Same diameter, same everything except the thickness which to me seems a non issue. But what do I know eh.
And....Mr. Cleaver, I would have to agree with you in that there was something clogged, but then again what do I know, LOL. Also I have not tested the tstat, in fact before I use it im going to replace it.
